Frozen Fury is the annual preseason ice hockey game played between the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings of the NHL, and is marking its fifteenth event this year with Frozen Fury XV. It was first held in 1997 in Paradise, Nevada, at the Grand MGM Garden Arena, and was won by the Kings. The latter have twice had to play opposite other teams instead of Avalanche, one competing against the San Jose Sharks and once against Phoenix Coyotes.
The series first game held in Las Vegas, also happened to mark the first ever outdoor game in NHL's history, and served a the predecessor to the present indoor series as well as the NHL's Winter Classic, which too is held annually as a regular season game played on New Years Day. Of all the teams that have ever been featured in the Fury, most have been won by the Kings who won ten out of fifteen matches. They are seconded by the Avalanche that won five out of thirteen games. In this year's forthcoming series, the famous New York Rangers will be debuting as its participants, making Frozen Fury XV tickets more exciting than ever.
The Kings, who are based in Los Angeles play from the Western Conferences' Division A and were founded in 1966 as an expansion team. They played from Inglewood's The Forum for thirty-two years before moving to the spacious Staples Center in 1999. The team won its first division in the 1990-91 season and have won the conference titles twice. They have entered the post-season games in all twenty-seven seasons, passing through the first round and moving ahead eleven times, and twice moving forward into the second rounds. The franchise first made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in the 1992-93 season, in which it lost five times to Montreal Canadiens. They won their first ever Stanley Cup in 2012, when they won from the New Jersey Devils in the sixth game of the Cup finals, marking the first eighth seeded team from North American sports to gain a championship.
Colorado Avalanche plays from the Western Conference's Northwest Division and are based in Denver, where they play their home games at the Pepsi Center. They were formed in 1972, known initially as the Quebec Nordiques of the World Hockey Association. They joined the NHL in 1979 following the WHA-NHL merger and by 1995 were sold to Denver's COMSAT Entertainment Group, which gave them their current name.The team has now won eight division titles while qualifying for their entire initial ten seasons played in Denver, ending this lucky streak in 2007. In addition, they have quite the record with two Stanley Cups, two Conference Championships, and two Presidents' Trophies. Their most famous players have included Ray Bourque, Patrick Roy, and Martin Brodeur, among others.
