Based in the North Texas City of Frisco, Frisco RoughRiders are a Class AA affiliate of the Texas Rangers major League Baseball Club. The team is assigned to the South Division and plays in the Texas League. The franchise was purchased by Mandalay Entertainment in 2003 and its name was changed from “Shreveport Captains” to Frisco RoughRiders. The team’s General Manager Mike McCall served from 2003 to 2006 and current manager is Scott Sonju.
The team currently plays at the “Dr Pepper Ballpark.” The stadium can accommodate more than ten thousand spectators and is quite unique and innovative. Just beyond the right center field wall, a pool area is available for rental. The first ever professional game in this state-of-the-art stadium was played in April 2003 in front of a sold-out crowd. The stadium also got the award of “Best New Ballpark for 2003” for its superior design, innovative style, attractive site and creative decor.
In 2003 season, Frisco RoughRiders advanced to Texas League Championship Series but lost four games to one. In 2004 season, the team finished off a brilliant second half run by clinching the Texas League East Division title and then moved on to win their first Texas League crown. They ended the 2005 season with 58-82 record. In 2006 season, they finished in third place in the South Division while in 2007 season, they earned the first half championship gaining an automatic spot in Texas League playoffs. They were named the 2007 Bob Freitas Awards winners.
2008 season attracted a lot of RoughRiders’ fans to the stadium and also brought more wins for the team. They won both first and second half titles and advanced to the Champion Series but lost the final game to Arkansas. In 2010 season, they earned First Half South Division championship. In 2011 season fans came to watch the famous game between Springfield Cardinals and RoughRiders in thousands which was won by RoughRiders. What made the occasion all the more special was the fact that the crowd in attendance that day surpassed the five million mark for the number of people that have came to the Dr, Pepper Stadium since its inception. They lost the best-of-five Divisional Rounds to the San Antonio Missions.
