Fresno State Bulldogs are the athletics teams of the Fresno State University, representing the school in a total of nineteen varsity games, all of which fall under the NCAA Division I. At first, football started being played in Fresno in the year 1921. Fresno State Bulldogs became a part of the California Coast Conference and by 1925, the team transferred to Northern California Athletic Conference. In 1937, the NCAA started categorizing colleges under the “College Division” and “University Division” groups. Then in 1939, the Bulldogs were instated in to the Collegiate Athletic Association. From 1969 to 1992, the team was part of the Big Western Conference, after which it became a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The Fresno State Bulldogs are however anticipated to become a member of the Mountain West Conference this year.

The seven men’s and twelve women’s varsity teams of the school consist of baseball, tennis, basketball, outdoor track & field, lacrosse, swimming and diving, softball, football, cross-country, golf, equestrian, volleyball and soccer. The team won the Softball NCAA Division I Championship in the year 1998 and then a Baseball NCAA Division I Championship in 2008. The school’s home baseball games are all played at the Pete Beiden Field, which holds a capacity of seating 5,757 fans. The Bulldog Stadium at the Jim Sweeney Field is the home ground to the Bulldogs for all of its football games. The stadium has the capacity to seat over 41,000 individuals at one time. Also, the Save Mart Center, again on the university’s campus is home ground to the Bulldog’s basketball team. From 2003-2008, the venue served as the university’s home field for minor league hockey team, the Fresno Falcons.

The women’s softball squad is renowned for its success, since its beginning. They stand distinguished as the number one team to win the NCAA National Championship in 1998, when the team defeated then-top Arizonian team in Oklahoma City. Much of the credit went to Amanda Scott and Nina Lindenberg, for their outstanding play. Apart from the championship win in 1998, Fresno State Bulldogs qualified for the NCAA Championship 4 times, including the honor of entering the College World Series for 12 seasons. The softball squad’s head coach is Margie Wright, who has won more than thirteen hundred games. Wright has led the side to ten Western Athletic Conference competitions in the past thirteen years, along with eighteen league titles.
