The Corpus Christi IceRays as they currently play were formed in 2010 but the roots of their history can be traced all the way back to 1997. That was the year when the first IceRays took to the filed as members of the Central Hockey League. The name was inspired from the various kinds of Stingrays that reside in the famous Gulf of Mexico. The team began to play at the Memorial Coliseum. That team played till 2010. The year 2001 saw the formation of another team the Pittsburgh Forge that played at the Island Sports Center.
 
In their first season the Pittsburgh Forge captured the second position in the East and went all the way to the finals. The next season turned out to be much more productive as they topped the East and went all the way to be crowned Champions. That was a remarkable start for a team which was just two years old. The name of the team was then changed to Toledo IceDiggers starting 2003-2004 campaign. The performances suffered and they dropped down to sixth spot for the next two seasons.
 
They moved to Alpena, Michigan after the 2004-2005 season and promptly changed their name to Alpena IceDiggers. The re-location saw the team's fortunes improve and they captured fifth spot in the standings. The next three seasons saw them achieve second, third and fourth place finishes respectively. The IceDiggers also made the playoffs at the end of those campaigns but lost in the first round on all three occasions. The team ended up getting the fifth spot on the standings in 2009-2010 and failed to make it to the playoffs for the first time in four years. The end of the season brought with it sweeping changes. The team were bought by owners of the IceRays. The Corpus Christi IceRays name, logo, management, uniforms and colors were all transferred to the new team. The IceRays from the Central Hockey League folded and its place was taken by the Corpus Christi IceRays that were members of the NAHL.
 
The Corpus Christi IceRays have managed to capture the fifth spot for the two seasons since then. They haven't made it to the playoffs either but there are signs that point towards a more prosperous future.
