Binghamton Bearcats
The Binghamton Bearcats is one of the four NCAA Division I athletics programs at SUNY Binghamton. Its men and women teams play Basketball, Soccer, Tennis and other sports and are simply called Bearcats. This university sports program is considered one of the most famous programs in the States.
Binghamton has been competing in the NCAA since 1950. In the initial years, Bearcats had no particular affiliations or mascots. They adopted their first mascot after joining SUNY and renaming as Harpur College.
Their first mascot was a donkey named Harpo. Then they further developed their athletics program and adopted the new school mascot, the red white and blue Colonials.
Nowadays, Binghamton's mascot is the fictional Bearcat named Baxter. Baxter wears a white home jersey with the number 1 on it and his name on the back. He also wears green shorts and green sneakers. The costume is designed mostly to resemble a bear but has some cat-like features, such as whiskers and a long tail.
Baxter has a wide smile and bright eyes that make him a smash hit among children as it makes appearances at various campus events, community functions, and other athletic events such as men's soccer games.
Bearcats have always been a competent and popular team. They give their best in every game and give the toughest of times to their competitors. In recent times, the team has shown considerable growth in both its play and fanbase.
In 2001, Binghamton has move from the Division III School into Division I. This was made possible due to the hard work of players and the director Joel Thirer.
They completed the distance from being in Division III to Division I faster than any other school in history and became a member of the America East Conference.
The university also has the pleasure of hosting a number of conference championships, including the 2005, 2006 and soon 2008 men's basketball championships. Its soccer team is also very popular.
It's Men's Soccer team made it to the 5th consecutive America East championship in 2007. It opened the season with the best record (5-0-0) since 1987. The Men's Tennis Team has won four of the last six America East titles and is on the way to win some more exciting games.
The Bearcats has given many star players to the world of sports. Rory Quiller is one of them who became won a Division 1 National Championship in 2008 at NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
He also became the first America East athlete to win a National Championship and received his third All- American honors. He also won the 2007 NCAA East Outdoor Track pole vault Championships with Binghamton University record (18' 1).
In Indoor Track, he posted a second place finish with (18' 1/2). Ryan Graham is also a popular diver from Binghamton who qualified for NCAA Division 1 Zone Championships in 2008.
The Binghamton Bearcats platy their home games at Bearcats Sports Complex. With a capacity of 5,322I, the center plays host to both men and women basketball games.
It boosts of many facilities including an indoor track where the track and field teams practice and compete, indoor tennis courts for both men and women tennis teams, as well as the primary weight and fitness equipment, sports medicine and uniform issuance facilities.
He Sports Complex was opened in the Fall of 2007 and features two artificial turf fields for soccer and lacrosse. One field is intended primarily for competition and the other for practice.
Additional features include night lighting, over 2,500 seats for the competition field and 1,000 for the practice field, a concession stand and bathrooms. In short, the place provides all the necessary facilities to the Bearcats and their fans.
Binghamton Bearcats is one of those gifted teams that have a very dedicated student fan base. BU Zoo is a student association group that dresses in all green and cheers on the Bearcats at every home basketball game and most away games.
Another popular Binghamton varsity cheer and dance team is the student association group Kickline while BU Pep Band provides musical entertainment at all home basketball games. The Bearcats fans are always present at all athletic functions in full force to show their love and support for their favorite team.
