St. Vincent is the stage name Anne Erin Clark adopted when she began her musical career in 2003. The multi-instrumentalist is now recognized as one of the most popular singer-songwriters in the indie music scene. She has become one of the few indie artists that have ventured successfully in the music industry as well as the television industry. Her electrifying persona and flamboyant style has become her trademark all across the globe.
Annie hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She set her hands on the guitar at just the age of twelve. As a teenager, she managed tours for her uncle and aunt's act, Tuck & Patti, which was a guitar-vocal jazz duo. At Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, Texas, she took part in the school's jazz band and also performed in the school's theatre. Her education pursuits took her to the renowned Berklee College of Music, where she studied for three years before dropping out. After that her life journey took her home to Texas where she started her professional music career.
At Berklee, Annie collaborated with fellow students in 2003 and released her first EP, Ratsliveonnoevilstar. The EP contained five tracks including "Bliss" and "Circle." Her first effort was well received by critics and the encouragement took her to Texas to join The Polyphonic Spree just before they began their European tour. The following year, she was one of the guitarists at Glenn Branca's hundred guitar orchestra for the Queen's performance.
Two years later, she left The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens took her into his touring band. By then Annie had released her second EP, Paris is Burning, under her stage name, St. Vincent. The EP contained three tracks; the title track, "What Me Worry?" and "These Days" which is a cover version of Jackson Browne's song.
In 2007, St. Vincent released her first album, Marry Me. The eleven track album highlighted her versatility and talent on different instruments. She played keyboards and guitars on the tracks "Jesus Saves, I Spend" and "Now, Now" and drums on "Your Lips Are Red" and "The Apocalypse Song." St. Vincent amazes the listener with her intense vocals on "Landmines" and the fantastic funereal waltz "Paris is Burning."
The album broke into the Top 40 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart. The following year, St. Vincent won the 'Female Artist of the Year' award out of the three nominations at the PLUG Independent Music Awards.
Her second album Actor is inspired by the scores to Disney and Woody Allen films. St. Vincent explored her lyrical diversity and based it on some of the most famous scenes from these films. The album reached the Top 10 of the US Independent Albums chart. Hit singles from the album include "Actor out of Work," "Laughing With a Mouth of Blood," and "Black Rainbow" among others.
Strange Mercy was released in 2011 and became St. Vincent's third. The album received widespread critical acclaim and reached the Top 10 in various charts. It peaked at the number nineteen spot at the Billboard 200. The hit singles "Cruel" and "Cheerleader" have been used in renowned televisions shows like Gossip Girl, Conan and Later. with Jools Holland.
Her collaboration with David Byrne in 2012 resulted in her fourth album, Love This Giant. The twelve tracks on the album featured a variety of brass musicians and lyrics by both artists. The album was well received and included hits like "Weekend in the Dust" and the trio collaboration with Walt Whitman, "The Forest Awakes."
2014 heralded St. Vincent's best album yet. The self-titled album garnered a number twelve spot at the Billboard 200 and three Top 10 spots on various charts, including the Top Rock Albums chart. The album is her most pop-centric album yet. With singles like "Birth in Reverse," "Digital Witness" and "Regret"; the album gave her fans and listeners a wide range of musical tracks.
St. Vincent is one of the rising stars from the indie music scene. Her music fuses chamber rock, indie rock, pop and cabaret jazz. She has been recognized and credited for her great performance on the original soundtracks of movies such as The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Gangster Squad and Boardwalk Empire. She has opened acts for renowned artists like Arcade Fire, Death Cab for Cutie and Grizzly Bear among numerous others. Currently she is touring worldwide as part of her Digital Witness Tour. So grab St Vincent tickets and enjoy her brilliant music.
