From the heartland in 1999, the spore called Slipknot exploded. Fortified with an arsenal of blistering music saturated with screams, drums, searing riffs, sampling, scratches and melody, Slipknot's cathartic rock music runs the scale from eerily thought-provoking to utterly terrifying.
Their mix of grinding, post-Korn alternative metal, Marilyn Manson-esque neo-shock rock, and rap-metal turned them into one of the most popular bands in the so-called nu-metal explosion of the late '90s.
Formed in 1995 in the unlikely locale of Des Moines, IA, Slipknot quickly garnered attention for their theatrical, attention-grabbing image.
The nine-piece lineup settled around DJ Sid Wilson, drummer Joey Jordison, bassist Paul Grey, percussionist Chris Fehn, guitarist James Root, sampler/programmer Craig Jones, percussionist Shawn 'Clown' Crahan, guitarist Mick Thompson, and lead vocalist Corey Taylor.
In their initial performances, the band would appear wearing identical industrial jump suits and homemade Halloween masks, while adding to its mysterious anonymity by adopting the numbers zero through eight as stage aliases.
Slipknot Tickets are seen as pioneers of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal who developed a lean and aggressive brand of metal. The music contains thrash, hardcore and death metal genres. The group's primary influences include Black Sabbath, Slayer, Judas Priest, Korn, AC/DC, Kiss and Beastie Boys.
Their infestation continued. Experimenting with their collective psyche not only through their songs, but also through their masks, their uniforms, their live shows, and even their fans and the culture they inhabited, Slipknot held nothing back.
On Halloween 1996, the group came up with a self-released album called 'Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat'. The release of the album began to build a buzz around them once it found its way to several labels.
'Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat' was picked up for distribution by the Nebraska-based -ismist label, and also drew the attention of Roadrunner Records, which signed Slipknot in 1997.
The depth of the band's expression is matched by that of their musical prowess. This tornado is laser-guided, and fellow musicians, critics, and fans know that Slipknot are deadly serious about their art.
They recorded their official, self-titled debut album, Slipknot' and released it in 1999. Slipknot gradually built an audience through near-constant touring, working their way up to the summer Ozzfest package tour. They were successfully managing to expand their fan-base by every passing day.
The album Slipknot spawned two hit tracks: 'Wait and Bleed' and 'Spit It Out', both got the band notable airplay. Their live shows were a much-discussed hit with metal fans, and the band performed with amazing energy.
It would not be wrong to say that most of the buzz came from touring and word of mouth. Slipknot was certified platinum in the first quarter of 2000.
The anticipation for Slipknot's follow-up album was intense. , and the band's sophomore effort, Iowa, bowed at number three upon its release in 2001. More heavy touring followed and after a long spell on the road, Slipknot took a break while the members worked on side projects.
The band set up its own label, Maggot Recordings, and signed a band called Downthesun. In 2002, Taylor wrote a commentary on the band's official website stating that they'd rather break up than become 'the next Gwar'.
The statement sparked a quickly resolved minifeud between Taylor and Gwar frontman Oderus Urungus. By early 2003, Taylor had announced plans for a new Slipknot album.
By August, the entire squad had decamped Iowa for LA, where they began recording their new album with famously bearded producer Rick Rubin.
Thus, after two platinum albums, two platinum home videos, and cover stories in Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, and Revolver, Slipknot came up with their ultimate expression: Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses).
They also issued an exclusive download, 'Pulse of the Maggots' in early 2004. On May 25th, the Vol 3: the Subliminal Verses finally dropped, to the usual clamor of great fanfare and furious anger.
The group then embarked on a brief tour as a warm-up for their dates headlining Ozzfest in summer 2004. Slipknot also debuted a fully-redesigned third generation of their famous masks.
On August 25, 2008, they returned to release their fourth studio album, entitled All Hope Is Gone. The album debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200 charts. They have issued three DVDs including 2002's Disasterpieces, which was certified quadruple-platinum in the United States.
Along with the bands like Machine Head and Children of Bodom, Slipknot has scheduled their Australia, Japan, Europe and the UK in the latter months of 2008.
