Mastodon was founded by the musicians Bill Keliher, Brann Dailor, Brent Hinds and Troy Sanders in the year 2000. These artists became acquainted at a High on Fire show. Discovering a common music interest and influences such as Thin Lizzy, Neurosis and Melvins, these talented artists decided to perform together. Recording their debut demo in the same year, Mastodon welcomed their lead singer, Eric Saner. The initial lineup of the ensemble had Bill Keliher on guitars, Brann Dailor on drums and Brent Hinds on rhythm guitar and Troy Sanders on bass. After presenting a four-song demo CD that was produced by Reptilian Records, singer Eric Saner left due to personal problems. Soon afterwards, Mastodon was able to get its debut recording contract with the Relapse Records in 2001. In the same year, Mastodon released an EP, "Lifesblood" consisting of five tracks namely "Shadows that Move", "Welcoming War", "We Built this Come Death", "Hail to Fire" and "Battle at Sea." The EP was awarded a three out of five star rating by AllMusic.

The band's debut studio album was released in 2002. Titled "Remission," the record was released by the Relapse Records. It received immense critical acclaim and positive reviews. Music publications such as AllMusic awarded it a four out of five star rating, while Pitchfork Media gave it a 9 out of 10 score. The song "Crusher Destroyer" was featured in Tony Hawk's Underground video game in 2003. Several songs from the album were also featured in MTV2 Headbangers Ball and on Contaminated 5.0.

A year later, Mastodon released its sophomore album, "Leviathan." This album was a concept record that was loosely based on "Moby Dick." Before the album was made available singles namely "Blood and Thunder", "Iron Tusk", "Seabest" and "I Am Ahab" were released. The record was added to Pitchfork Media's list of "Top 200 Albums of 2000s" and was placed on top of the MetalSucks' list of "Best Metal Albums of 21^st Century." Similar to its predecessor, "Leviathan" was awarded successful ratings. With a five out of five star rating awarded by AllMusic and Kerrang!; the record was given a 10 out of 10 score by Metal Hammer. In the same year, Mastodon embarked on its debut promotional tour for the album. The musicians performed alongside Slipknot, Lamb of God and Slayer in "the Unholy Alliance" tour. Several songs from this album can be heard in video games such as Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Saints Row, Guitar Hero: Mettalica, Rock Band 3, Guitarfreaks V2 and Drummania V2.

Throughout Mastodon's career, the progressive/sludge rock group has produced six studio albums, with its most recent one expected to release in 2014.
