Before the formation of the band, Bill Gaither along with his wife, Gloria Gaither and friend, Gary McSpadden were members of the vocal group named The Gaither Trio. Formed in the late 50s, the trio had already marked their place in the industry and had to their name two Grammy Awards and ten 'Songwriters of the Year Awards'. Known as the masters of gospel at that time, the Gaither Trio was also inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame. Elvis Presley was one of their biggest fans and covered their song "He Touched Me." He also named his album He Touched Me after Gaither's song and won a Grammy Award for it as well.
 
Bill Gaither and his wife started their career as songwriters. During the 80s, when the trio was jamming and just having fun with instruments, on friend's urging, Bill Gaither gave singing a try. His outstanding vocals encouraged the trio to perform in front of live audience. Their music included the elements of country gospel, southern gospel, contemporary Christian and bluegrass gospel. Their first performance as vocalists hit the nail and the audience went wild after hearing their fresh and unique sound. That impromptu performance marked the beginning of an era and the Gaither Vocal Band was formed.
 
Today, Michael English is the lead vocalist of the band, Wes Hampton and David Phelps are tenors, Mark Lowry is the baritone and Bill Gaither is the bassist. Together, these talented vocalists have released several studio albums and won various prominent awards. The Gaither Vocal Group has released 27 albums out which 19 have been ranked on top spots on music charts worldwide.  Nine of their albums have won the GMA Dove Award for "Southern Gospel Album of the Year." These include 'God Is Good', 'Reunited', 'Still the Greatest Story Ever Told' and 'Greatly Blessed'.
 
In the early 90s, the band also won a Grammy Award for their album Homecoming for "Best Southern Gospel, Country Gospel or Bluegrass Gospel album."  In the early 2000s, the Gaither Vocal Band won another Grammy Award for the album Lovin' Life. Till now the group has provided the industry with more than 700 popular songs. Some of the prominent ones to win an award for the Southern Gospel Song of the Year are, "He's Watching Me," "I Believe in a Hill Called Mount Calvary," Better Day" and "God is Good All the Time."
