The formation of Charlotte Symphony Orchestra dates back to 1978 when Fred Blake started it as a small chamber group of six retirees and two high school students. In 1993 Charlotte Symphony Orchestra elevated itself to professional stature, included paid musicians and increased the number of performances. In 2007, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra also released a music collection- its first compact disc. It included some exceptional work by Schubert, Beethoven, Mahler and Mozart. Two years later the symphony also launched a huge fundraising campaign at its "Celebrate America" concert and managed to raise 4.3 million dollars with the aim of bridging the budget gap over a six year period.

Currently the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra is one of the largest and most active professional orchestras in the country. With a hundred professional musicians and more than a hundred performances every year, the Charlotte Orchestra has attracted around 200,000 attendees annually. The symphony is also the resident orchestra for the North Carolina Dance Theatre and Opera Carolina Theatre.
