Yngwie Malmsteen or guitar virtuoso, Malmsteen is one of the most popular rock artists from Sweden. He is the third in line after fastest guitar playing prodigies Michael Angelo Batio and Chris Impellitteri. He is the front man, guitarist/composer of his metal band that he started off in the eighties. His claim to fame is his technical proficiency in playing the guitars which made him the "pioneer of neo-classical metal". He continues to play mostly with his band, but also likes to go solo at times.
Yngwie Malmsteen was a part of a musical family who was obsessed with legends like Jimi Hendrix at the age of seven. He took up the guitars soon after realizing that he could play and self-taught himself some exceptional technique and skills in a very short time. During his teens he came across the works of another virtuoso, violinist Niccolò Paganini. The influence of Paganini's music and style on Malmsteen was deep, so much so that he was rumored to think of himself as a reincarnation of the Genoaian violinist. Paganini's classical concerto pieces helped Malmsteen learn some good finger work and riffs.
Down the lane name like Genesis' Steve Hackett, Uli Jon Roth, Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore and Brian May further influenced him. The result of listening to all these names was the evolution of modern rock in Yngwie's mind. This modern rock was loaded with modal guitar progressions induced by non-guitar playing techniques. Once presented to mainstream music Malmasteen was became noticed as the creator of the genre of neoclassical metal rock. While contemporaries like Tony MacAlpine, Paul Gilbert and Randy Rhoads struggled to make their mark, Yngwie Malmsteen became the king of the genre.
Malamsteen relocated from Sweden to the USA in 1982 when Shrapnel Records singed him after hearing his demo tape. Known for promoting and projecting shred music the label signed his band Steeler for the debut self-titled. It was released after much delay in 1983 due to a tussle with the company. After this episode Malamsteen joined the band Alcatrazz, for "No Parole From Rock N' Roll" (1983) and "Live Sentence" (1984). Soon after, he went for on a solo career releasing the Grammy nominated album "Rising Force". This album won titles of the Guitar Player Magazine's Best Rock Album and number one position on many other charts. "Marching Out" in 1985 was followed by "Trilogy" in 1986; these two albums were commercially mediocre. Fender Stratocaster a signature series by Malamsteen was released in 1988. The series brought him to the league of honored guitarists like Eric Clapton.
"Odyssey" the fourth album hit stands in 1989 as the artist biggest studio album. It featured the phenomenal track Heaven Tonight that made the album a record selling deal for Malmasteen. Many tours followed the release of the album. To celebrate the success of "Odyssey", another album and the first live compilation "Trial By Fire: Live in Leningrad" was released. It featured songs recorded at a concert in Leningrad, Russia, the largest concert by any western artist in the country.
For Malamsteen the 90's were not as eventful as the eighties, however, her still managed hits like "Eclipse", the first compilation "The Yngwie Malmsteen Collection" followed by "Fire and Ice" and "The Seventh Sign". The best bit about this time was the continuous success that came in through touring. Malamsteen toured Asia and Europe and staged concerts in some of the biggest arenas there, before landing in the USA. When he came to the US, the grunge movement had already taken the lead over metal. Hence, Yngwie kept touring Japan and Europe and started working on a Concerto Suite masterpiece featuring his Electric Guitars with Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2003 he joined Super G3 tour with guitar icons Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. This concert remained the highlight of his performances in that decade leading to another splendid live compilation.
At the dawn of the new millennium Malamsteen struggled with his band's lineup. His albums "The Genesis" and "Attack!!" were recoded and released in 2002 and featured vocals of Doogie White. The next four albums "Unleash the Fury", "Perpetual Flames", "Angels of Love" and "Relentless" were moderately helpful in reviving the magic of Malmasteen and his music. His latest release "Spellbound" followed a similar fate until Malmsteen decided to promote it through a tour. Yngwie Malmsteen tickets take all fans to this great tour where they can enjoy a live show presenting his best hits and some wonderful new tracks from "Spellbound". Grab them soon.
