Thievery Corporation is a group of two musicians, Eric Hilton and Rob Garza, along with their accompanying artists. Based in Washington D.C., they are known for their disk jockeying. The duo works with a wide range of music genres which include acid jazz, Indian classical, Middle Eastern, Brazilian music for example bossa nova, reggae and dub. Formation of this band took place in 1995 when co-owner of Eighteenth Street Lounge, Eric Hilton got together with Rob Garza to put their creative talents and their passion for clubs as well as jazz, dub and bossa nova music to great use. They made a decision of recording a mix of these various genres in a proper studio. This decision led to the formation of the record label named 'Eighteenth Street Lounge Music'. Thievery Corporation was first noticed by people with their debut studio album titled Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi which was released in the year 1997.

Three years later, Thievery Corporation released their second album. It was called The Mirror Conspiracy. It included performances of Loulou, Emiliana Torrini and Pam Bicker. Their third studio album by the name of 'The Richest Man in Babylon' was released in 2002 by their own recording label. With growing popularity, their music gained more depth. Their fourth studio album, released in 2005, called 'The Cosmic Game' constituted music that was darker and had stronger influence on its listeners. Its psychedelic qualities were even more profound then that of their earlier albums. Moreover, it consisted of more illustrious singers like David Byrne, Perry Farrell and The Flaming Lips vocalist Wayne Coyne.

However, it was Thievery Corporation's fifth album titled 'Radio Retaliation' that brought them the recognition in the music community that they so rightly deserved. It hit the shelves in the year 2008. It got them a Grammy nomination for 'Best Recording Package'. Their latest album is 'Culture of Fear' which they released in June 2011.

Moreover, Thievery Corporation has taken up a number of causes over the years, political as well as social. They recorded a song titled ?Sol Tapado? for the album Silencio=Muerte: Red Hot + Latin Redux which was for AIDS Benefit purpose. It was the production of the Red Hot Organization. Among their political stances, they have raised their voice against war and exploitation in trade. They have shown their support for the World Food Program and human rights. They have expressed their views via songs like Revolution Solution and Amerimacka which were released during George W. Bush's government. Through their song Vampires they articulated their views on IMF at a concert in 2009. Another example is their participation in the 'Operation Ceasefire Concert', where they put forth their support of putting an end to the Iraq War.

The band has been on numerous tours in the course of their career. In 2006, they were seen on a tour around the USA with 'Lollapalooza'. Thievery Corporation did a number of shows in Washington D.C. on their tour of the US to promote their fifth album. These shows were hosted by the 9.30 Club and were all sold out. The audience absolutely loved them. Then in August, 2009, they opened the concert of Sir Paul McCartney with their performance at the FedEx Field.
