Winner of three Grammy Awards, the Temptations is a five-member vocal group formed in 1960. It is known for its unique tracks, flashy wardrobes and choreography. The origin of the Temptations dates back to the time when members, Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks began singing in the church. As teenagers, Kendricks and Williams founded a doo-wop quartet 'The Cavaliers' in 1955. 'The Cavaliers' consisted of Wiley Waller and Kell Osbourne, in addition to the two founding members. It was this group that became 'The Primes' upon the relocation of its members from Birmingham to Detroit. The Primes became a well-known doo-wop group and released several singles before disbanding in 1960.
Soon a friend Otis Williams contacted Kendricks and offered him the spot of the lead singer in his newly formed band. Kendricks along with Williams agreed to join the group. Together members, Melvin Franklin, Otis Williams, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks and Elbridge Bryant auditioned for the Motown Records under the name 'The Elgins,' in 1961. Impressed by their talent, the founder of Motown, Berry Gordy, signed the group to the recording company's imprint, Miracle Records. He then suggested the members to change their name from 'The Elgins' to 'The Temptations.'
The band's first charting single 'Dream Come True' was released in 1962. It reached number 22 on Billboard R&B chart. Other popular releases of the year include 'Check Yourself,' 'Of Mother of Mine,' 'I Want a Love I Can see.' In the group's career so far, it has released 43 studio albums, 4 live albums, 15 compilation releases and 109 singles. Out of the 43 studio releases, 14 have reached number 1 on Top R&B/Hip hop albums chart, 15 singles have topped the R&B Singles chart while 8 have been placed in the top 10. The band also received the 2013 'Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award' and received induction into R&B Music Hall of Fame in the same year. The vocal group, sharing the stage with the Temptations is Four Tops. It is a Detroit based soul/R&B group that has been active since 1953. Initially named 'the Four Aims,' it comprised high school friends, Lawrence Payton, Levi Stubbs, Renaldo Benson and Abdul Fakir. After three years of the group's formation, it signed a contract with the Chess Records after which the group renamed itself as 'Four Tops.' It wasn't until 1963 that the Four Tops was able to release charting hits. Prior to this year, the all-male group was seen touring heavily. The group's debut single 'Baby I Need Your Loving' reached the 11th spot on the Billboard chart. The songs that followed saw similar success. This included the top 40 hit 'Without the One You Love' and the top 10 hit 'Ask the Lonely.' In 1965, the Four Tops produced their first number one hit 'I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Brunch),' apart from releasing several top 10 songs such as 'Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over),' 'Something About You,' 'It's the Same Old Song' and 'Loving You is Sweeter.'
