The Grammy Award winning The Roots is an American hip hop band that originated from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1987. The original lineup of the group included Tariq Trotter known as Black Thought, as the MC vocal artist/rapper and Ahmir Thompson, called Questlove (?uestlove) as the drummer. Both, Black Though and Questlove were classmates at the Philadelphia High School for Creative Performing Arts, where they both met and developed a bond of friendship. They started playing at the school and also on the streets, and added two other members Malik B. who was also a rapper, and Leonard Hubbard who was a bassist. The band then began with doing concerts around Philadelphia, along with the New York City. Dice Raw, another MC, regularly made album appearances with the band from 1995 to 1999 before exiting the band in order to record a solo album. The joining and leaving of artists continued till 2007, when the bassist, Leonard Hubbard left the group.
Other than lack Thought and Questlove, the current lineup of the group includes members such as Kamal keyboard artists, F Knuckles percussionist, Owen Biddle bassist, and Captain Kirk guitarist. The producer of the band is Game Theory. A sousaphone artist, named Damon "Tuba Gooding Jr." Bryson, joins the band while they are touring. Gaining critical acclaim and influencing several rap and R&B acts, The Roots have worked together with a wide range of artists from different genres, including Cody Chesnutt and Roy Ayers. In addition, all the band members have worked with PETA to encourage empathy for animals and the vegetarian way of life.
Releasing their debut album, Organix, in 1993, The Roots have been largely known and famed for a deeply jazzy and glitzy sound and also for their use of live instrumentals. The band has revealed the technique designed for live rap and has adopted the flavor of the season by focusing on live instrumentation in their studio work as well as in their concerts/live acts. They have released eight studio albums, two live ones, three compilation albums, twenty-two music videos and seventeen singles. Things Fall Apart, released in 1999, was their breakthrough album as it peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 charts and earned a gold record, managing to make a minimum of 500,000 units U.S. sales. Their album, Tipping Point, released in 2004, was also a very famous one as it peaked at #4 on the Billboard album chart. Their latest album to be released in October 2009 is How I Got Over. This album bespeaks the relief felt by the band when the Bush administration ended and the Obama presidency started. The album will be played live, with any covers being re-translated by the band.
