System of a Down is home to some of the best known artists in American rock music including lead vocalist, keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Serj Tankian (who is also known for a highly successful solo career), guitarist and vocalist Daron Malakian, bassist and background vocalist Shavo Odadjian and drummer John Dolmayan. All members of the band except for the drummer studied at the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School but eventually met each other in 1992 at the same recording studio where they were working on different projects. They then started a band and called in Soil with a different bassist and drummer. The band performed live shows and recorded music together but in 1994, the band split up. After the split up, the three schoolmates formed a new band and called it System of a Down.
System of a Down then worked on a demo tape titled as Untitled 1995 Demo Tape and was followed by Demo Tape 2 in 1996. In 1997, they recorded a third demo tape titled as Demo Tape 3 and followed it up with a collection titled as Hye Enk, Armenian for We’re Armenian, which was released as a tribute to the victims of the Armenian Genocide. It was the band’s first official release and it followed by a performance at famous Hollywood clubs such as the Viper Room and Whisky A-Go-Go. These performances attracted Rick Rubin and it led to them recording a fourth demo tape at the end of 1997, made specifically for record companies. Rick Rubin led to the band being signed onto Columbia Records and they began work on their first studio album. The same year, they also won the Rock City Award for the Best Signed Band.
In 1998, System of a Down released its first studio work, a self-titled album, and toured massively supporting the likes of Metallica and Slayer and performing at festivals such as Ozzfest. In 2001, they released their second studio album, Toxicity, which ranked first on charts in USA and Canada and was certified multi-platinum, selling over twelve million copies. One of the album’s songs, Toxicity, was ranked fourteenth on VH1’s list of the 40 Greatest Metal Songs. It was followed by the limited edition release, Steal This Album! In 2005, they released the double album consisting of two parts; Mezmerize and Hypnotize. Both albums debuted first on the US charts, making them one of only five artists to have had two albums debut first on the charts in the same year.
In 2006, System of a Down went on a hiatus as the band members decided they needed time to rest. In 2011, they reunited with performances at several festivals such as the Download Festival in the UK, the Greenfield Festival in Switzerland, the Rock AM Ring/Rock IM Park in Germany and Metaltown in Sweden. They are coming up for some more live performances which can be enjoyed by booking System of a Down tickets.
