Stromae was born in 1985. He comes from a mixed Belgian and Rwanda descent. After the death of his father in the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, Stromae started developing an interest in music. He started experimenting with instruments at the age of eleven and enrolled into the Academie musicale de Jette where he started playing drums while studying music history. After finishing his studies, the young artist took on the stage name of Opmaestro and made his debut in the music industry as a rapper. He later changed his name to Stromae; maestro's syllabic inversion. Before his success as Stromae, he founded a rap group named "Suspicion." The group was based in Eichof and consisted of rapper "J.E.D.I.". After the release of the song "Faut que t'arrete le Rap", J.E.D.I. decided to leave the group and Stromae decided to pursue further music education before launching himself as a solo artist. The aspiring singer registered at the Institut national de radioelectricite et cinematographie while also working in the hospitality industry to pay his dues.
During his time at this institute, Stromae released his debut EP "Juste un cerveau, un flow, un fond et un mic..." With this the young songwriter decided to concentrate on his music career with complete devotion. The success of his EP, brought forth offers from labels such as the Kilomaitre and Because Music. A year later, Stromae worked as a trainer at the NRJ radio station. It was during this time that the music manager of the radio station heard Stromae's "Alors on Danse" and decided to play it on NRJ. The response that followed was immensely overwhelming as the song was appreciated by notable names such as Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ana Wintour and Nicholas Sarkozy, the French President. The song received more airtime and within a matter of days, sales peaked and the track landed on the number one spot of the Belgium Singles chart. Within a year's time, "Alors on Danse" topped the charts in Greece, the Netherlands, France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Czech Republic, Romania and Denmark. In the same year, Stromae released a remix of his hits featuring Kanye West and received MTV Europe Music Award in the category of "Best Dutch and Belgian Act."
Stromae released his debut album in 2010. Titled "Cheese," the record was awarded with a Victoires de la Musique Award for "Best Dance Album". In the following year, Stromae performed a mash up of his hit single and Black Eyed Peas' "Don't Stop the Party" on "Taratata", a French television show. After this collaborative performance with the B.E.P., Stromae announced that he would tour with the group as its opening act for the concerts in Paris at the Stade De France. In 2013, Stromae released his debut single from his sophomore album. The track was named "Papaoutai" that translates to "Square Root." The single ranked number one in France and Belgium while on the second spot in the Netherlands and seventh in Switzerland and Germany.
