Sound Tribe Sector Nine was formed in 1998 with five musicians coming together, namely Hunter brown, Jeffrey Learner, David Murphy, David Phipps and Zach Welmer. They started off with a nouveau style in psychedelic rock music. Staring off from basic jamming sessions the band developed into one of the most popular and loved musical acts in the country. Like much of the psychedelic rock music prevalent in the world the Sound Tribe's music too is highly influenced by mysticism particularly one hailing from the Mayan culture. Their third album "Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace" saw an immense influence of this trend adopted by the band. The ensemble has developed a special focus on spirituality and equality over the years and this reflects in their songs to a great extent. They have eleven albums to their credit with an additional of two remix albums.
 
This season the band is all set to hit the stage and continue their journey of electrifying crowds with their rocking performances. They have shows lined up in Oregon, Washington and Los Angeles. The band faced a setback in 2011 when its bassist David Murphy was diagnosed with cancer; however, as he regained health the band once again came back on its feet. Now after a year's break they are coming to entertain their fans once again. They have shows booked across the country where fans will witness live performances of songs especially from their latest recorded album. Undoubtedly the genius of Sound Tribe lies in their live performances. They have been performing at sold out venues for almost a decade now and their fan base continues to grow. The band has also made commendable use of its star power. They have been involved with charities and fundraising throughout. In 2005 they held a special fund raising concert to collect funds to help the Katrina flood victims. The following year the band led a "Live as Time Changes Tour", that was a one of a kind example to support the cause of using environment friendly energy.  The band used renewable energy as the power source for their concerts. Sound Tribe was also one of the bands featuring on the album "Peaceblaster: The New Orleans make it right remixes", the proceeds of which went to build a home for families displaced by the hurricane disaster. This trend towards social service has helped the band develop a devoted fan base.
 
Sound Tribe also comes up with side projects from time to time and have a unique way of experimentation. One example of this would be when the band came under the name of "Tzolkin" and gave performances in different cities across US. Another side project was when two of the members, David Phipps and Hunter Brown came together under "Landscape and Breath". They created slightly softer melodies that were later incorporated in albums of Sound Tribe. Another notable side project of the band is "Pigs on the Wing" which is a conglomeration of eight musicians from various bands such as Velveteen Pink and Cinemechanica including David Murphy from Sound Tribe. This is actually a Pink Floyd tribute group and has around eight live performances to its credit.
