Shaggy Cities
Shaggy, the Jamaican/American reggae singer and deejay, created waves in the industry with his distinctive voice and streak of hits on the Billboard charts. Born Orville Richard Burrell, Shaggy took his stage name from the look of his hair. Over a career spanning more than a decade, Shaggy has compiled a list of achievements and permanently made his mark in the reggae world. He is perhaps one of the best-known artists in the genre and his fame transcends borders and generations. He still continues to produce popular reggae fusion and hip-hop music that has gained him legions of followers in his birth country, America and worldwide.
Career beginnings
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Burrell moved to Brooklyn, New York during the 80's. In 1987, he began taking singing courses in the city before he formally took it up as a career. Burrell enlisted in the US Marine Corps and carried on singing throughout his military services. He decided to embark on a singing career in 1993 releasing his first hit single the same year.
The single "Oh Carolina" was a dancehall re-make of Folkes Brothers' hit. The single debuted on the "Modern Rock Tracks" chart at number fourteen. In 1995, it was followed by another massive hit that soon became Shaggy's biggest claim to fame. The single "Boombastic/In The Summertime" peaked at number one on the "Hot Rap Singles" chart. It also featured at number three on "The Billboard Hot 100" chart.
Over the years, the reggae star continued to release top charting singles including the likes of the number one "Billboard Hot 100" single "It Wasn't Me." The single sold over a million copies worldwide and also peaked at first place on the "Top 40 Mainstream" and "Top 40 Tracks" charts. 2000 single "Angel" was another chart-topping hit.
Success on the Billboard charts
Shaggy's most popular album to date is his sophomore effort Boombastic. The album peaked at number one on "The Billboard 200" and went on to achieve platinum certification. It also won the Grammy Award for "Best Reggae Album" establishing Shaggy as a top contender in the genre. The reggae prodigy further stamped his mark on the music scene with one hit album after the next. Among the major hits was Hotshot, the 2000 album that rocked three Billboard charts including "The Billboard 200" and the "R&B Albums" chart. The album sold over a million copies and earned multi-platinum certification.
List of awards and notable collaborations
The prolific artist has released twelve studio albums to date and it is a mark of his talent and success that five of those albums were nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Reggae Album." The most recent nomination at the Grammy's was for the 2014 album Out of Many, One Music. He also earned another Grammy nomination for "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocal" for the single "It Wasn't Me" featuring Rikrok. Shaggy got nominated for three American Music Awards and won a 2002 Juno Award for his best-selling album Hotshot.
