The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra has been performing for the last seventy years. Under the leadership of Myung Whun Chung, the orchestra has set a new benchmark for orchestral music in Korea. The orchestra presents a repertoire that ranges from Messiaen to Mozart. It strives to break box office records by performing to sold out crowds. In 2007, the orchestra reached out to the international audience by performing in Japan, China, Thailand and the Carnegie Hall in New York. The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra performed at the United Nations Headquarters, showcasing itself as a diplomatic envoy. In 2010, the orchestra held a tour of North America and Europe. It earned immense acclaim in 2012 for its North American tour that also included a performance at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. After its North American Tour, the orchestra performed at the European Festival tour. It has also performed at the highly prestigious Edinburgh International Festival in 2011. The European tour of the orchestra included performances in cities such as Bologna, Prague, St. Petersburg, and Berlin. The tour was received with positive reviews being called "an irresistible maelstrom" and "a world class orchestra" by notable critics.
In 2013, the orchestra performed a mind blowing show at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. This particular venture was to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the relationship between Beijing-Seoul as sister cities. In 2014, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra is scheduled to perform at some of the leading European music festivals. It has been given invitations to play live at the BBC Proms, the Merano Music Festival, the Grafenegg Festival and the Turku Music Festival.
Apart from performing at conventional concert venues, the orchestra plays over seventy concerts yearly in classrooms, visiting parks and local churches. Furthermore, in 2011 the orchestra became the first in Asia to sign an exclusive international contract with the honorable Deutsche Grammophon label for ten CDs.
The debut album of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra was released in July 2011. It was followed in November 2011 by the famed Mahler's Symphony No.1. The two albums by the orchestra have been certified Platinum. Mahler's Symphony No.2 came out in April 2012. Later, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.6 better known as "Pathetique" in collaboration with "Vocalise" of Rachmaninoff's came out in August 2012. In 2013, Piano Concerto No.5 and Beethoven's Symphony No.5 with Sunwook Kim was released by the orchestra. In December 2013, the orchestra released the latest addition of its work of Beethoven Symphony No.9. Seoul Philharmonic will be releasing Mahler Symphony No.9 and three Concertos with Chin in affiliation with the Deutsche Grammophon label in the mid of 2014.
