Adu started her professional music career in late 70s when she was a college student. She stayed with a local English band called Pride as the backing vocalist for some years. Adu, together with Matthewman, Cook and Denman left the band and made their own group called Sade in 1982. In Dec 1982, Sade did their debut at Ronnie Scott's Club, London. A few months later, Andrew Hale joined the band and Cook left. Shortly, Adu was offered a deal by Epic Records and together with her band members; Sade released its first album Diamond Life in July 1984. It debuted at # 2 on UK Albums Chary, # 5 in the U.S Billboard 200. Diamond Life was certified 2x platinum in France and Canada and was awarded 4x Platinum in the U.K and the U.S. "Why Can't We Live Together", "Your Love is King", "When Am I Going To Make a Living" and "Smooth Operator" are the notable tracks from this album.

Promise, the second album by Sade was released in November 1985. It earned the # 1 spot at the U.K Albums Chart, U.S Billboard 200, U.S top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Swiss Albums Chart. Promise was certified 2x platinum in Canada and U.K and 4x Platinum in the U.S by RIAA. "Never as Good as the First Time", "You're Not the Man", "The Sweet Taboo", "Is It a Crime" and "War of Hearts" are the beautiful tracks from this album. Their next album in line was Stronger Than Pride and it was released in May 1988. This album could not perform that well on the charts but did earn its fair share of the platinum certification by RIAA and BPI. Sade toured the world in the late 80s and made some serious fan following in Europe, Asia, Africa, Canada, Australia and America. Their fourth studio album Love Deluxe was released in 1992.

Sade released their first compilation album in November 1994. After this Adu went to hibernation for 8 years straight and the other band members started their own bands. The beautiful Nigerian singer Sade Adu came back with a bang in 2000 with her performance in Mobo Awards and her band members were just a call away to get together again. Their enchanting music is again making their fans sing along to it.
