Started in 1978 by Music Director and co-founder Timothy Russell, the orchestra does not only feature native artists but also rising stars and international musicians. It comprises of 35 members, each of which have excelled in their fields and have polished their skills even further as the orchestra approaches its 34th session this year.
The ProMusica Chamber Orchestra recently welcomed its new Music Director David Danzmayr, who along with the creative partner and principal guest artist Vadim Gluzman and conductor laureate Timothy Russell lead the orchestra. On the first set of violins there is Katherine McLin, who is also the concert master, the assistant concert master Marjorie Bagley along with Ruth Stroud, Christine Hauptly Annin, Robert Firdman and Laurel Lawshae. On the second set there is Robert Gillespie who is also the principal, William Manley, Heather Kufchak and Eric Kline. The violas are led by Mary Harris who works with Ayn Balija and Brett L. Allen. The harpsichord, harp and percussion are played by Aya Hamada, Jeanne Norton and Joshua Bowman respectively. Thomas Battenberg and Timothy Leasure are responsible for playing the trumpet while the horns are played by Charles Waddell and David Urschel. Other members include marc Moskovitz, Cora Kuyvenhoven, Nathaniel Chaltkin and Joel Becktell on Cello, Paul Robinson and John Pellegrino on Bass, Katherine DeJongh and Katherine Borst Jones on the flute, Donna Conaty and Melissa Stevens on oboe, Robert Spring and Jenny Hublin on the clarinet and lastly Ellen Connors, Joyce Fleck and Julie Ann Link on the Bassoon.
The multi-award winning Music Director and conductor Timothy Russell has been leading the orchestra group since its formation in 1978. Russell has previously collaborated with some of the biggest names of the industry such as R. Carlos Nakai the cedar flutist, the Guarneri String Quartet, composer Frank Zappa, Irish fiddler Eileen Ivers, Borromeo String Quartet, the Manhattan Transfer, flutist Sir James Galway, World Saxophone Quartet, pianists Gabriela Montero and Andre Watts, vocalist/lyricist Nanci Griffith and Béla Fleck the banjo master. Not only has he produced over 33 CDs but has also created more than 100 fresh compositions internationally.
Russell's work has been appreciated by his fans and critics alike and has earned him two Grammy Award nominations to date. Apart from that, he received the Ohioana Pegasus Award in the year 2006. This prestigious award is given to exceptional artists who have made some remarkable contributions in the humanities and arts. In the past it has been awarded to several outstanding musicians such as folk artist Elijah Pierce, conductor Erich Kunzel and entertainers Roy Rogers and Doris Day.
This year however, David Danzmayr has been entrusted with the responsibility of being the Music Director of the orchestra. Having worked with numerous renowned names of today's industry and winning several prestigious awards, David will now be continuing ProMusica's convention of blending together contemporary and classical repertoire. Alongside his artistic leadership, he will also be taking a part in ProMusica's outreach and education program to help the group in fulfilling its commitment to the audiences more effectively.
