Ne Yo was raised in Las Vegas, where he started performing at a young age under the name "GoGo". He joined an R&B group called 'Envy' and began performing with them on the syndicated TV show, 'Showtime at the Apollo'. After the group disbanded in 2000, Ne Yo went on to write songs for other artists before embarking on his own singing career.

He recorded an album and released the song, That Girl, as his debut single. The American singer, Marques Houston, heard him singing this song and re-recorded it for his own, 2003 album, "MH". The song became a huge hit and also earned Ne Yo recognition and acclaim.

Ne Yo continued to write songs and also contributed his works to many contemporary singers; Christina Milian's record "It's About Time", Teedra Moses's 2004 album "Complex Simplicity", and Younstown to name a few. Mary J. Bilge, B2K, Musiq and Faith Evans have also performed Ne Yo's songs. His song, Let Me Love You, which he wrote for Mario became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained at that position for nine consecutive weeks. That was the turning point for Ne Yo, who then landed a recording deal and began his own singing career.

Ne Yo released his debut album, "In My Own Words," in early 2006. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and produced the hit single, So Sick. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and the album also sold more than 301,000 copies in its first week. Two more singles, Sexy Love and You're Mad, also reached number seven and fifteen respectively. The album went on to be certified platinum and cemented Ne Yo as the new sensation in the music world.

His sophomore album was released in 2007. Titled "Because of You," this record also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and followed its predecessor by being  certified platinum.

Ne Yo's third album came out in 2008. Titled "Year of the Gentleman," it became his third album to receive a platinum certification. Two singles, Miss Independent and Closer, debuted at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. This album also earned Ne Yo a number of Grammy Award nominations, with Miss Independent landing him a trophy as well.

In 2010, Ne Yo released "Libra Scale" followed by a couple of hit singles in the following years. His fifth album, "R.E.D (Realizing Every Dream)" came out in 2012 and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200.
