Ballinger started posting videos in January 2008 and has so far posted more than 300 of them on her YouTube channel. With her off-key singing style and bizarre voice lessons, Miranda didn't take long to become a popular internet character. Another YouTube channel on which Sings is featured is mirandavlogz. To date, the main YouTube channel of Miranda Sings has exceeded 170 million views. The channel has around 1.8 million subscribers. Her first video that went viral was Free Voice Lessons, which crossed 500,000 views. To draw more attention and make her character go even more viral, she modified her features so that people could make fun of her hair and give negative comments on YouTube.

She started cabaret performances in 2009 and has so far appeared at sold-out venues in all the major cities including New York, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago and others. She has also been to the UK on her one-woman cabaret acts. With her innovative skills, Ballinger is said to be the 'oddest breakout star' in the theatre world. Apart from her YouTube channel, Miranda Sings has also appeared on a number of web series and internet interviews.

In 2009, she performed with the cast of Mamma Mia at the Broadway Easter Bonnet competition. She has presented at the CYT Director's Choice Awards, Nightlife Awards and co-hosted the Broadway Memories, a benefit concert, which was held at the Rose Center Theatre. She also headlined the Out of the Loop Fringe Festival in Texas. Ballinger has released a Christmas EP titled Christmas with Miranda Sings in 2009.
