Born in October 1971, Lyte was born and brought up in Brooklyn. At only twelve years of age she started rhyming. In her young teens, at 15 years of age she recorded I Cram to Understand U, her first ever recording. The song was based on a love story and it gave Mc Lyte a reason to enter the music world and make other big recordings out here. Only two years later than this recording of hers, Mc Lyte released her first album in September 1988 which became a huge hit and was termed as "Battle Rap" from  Antoinette, the Hurby Azor associate of that time.

Following her first album, she churned out hits like Cappuccino and Cha Cha Cha from her debut album Eyes on This. Her 1991 release Act like You Know was known for hits like Poor Georgie amongst others. Ain't No Other was her fourth album which reached gold status and became recognized by big artists such as Brandy and Janet Jackson. Her other albums like Bad As I Wanna B included hits like Cold Rock a Party and Keep on, Keepin' On. She also recorded her songs with the ever renowned music company East West Records America.

In 1998, her follow-up album Seven & Seven and this was later followed by The Undaground Heat released in 2003. The album featured hits like Ride With Me and also got nominated for a Grammy and a BET award. Mc Lyte has had a very successful career in voice over as well and has worked with a number of famous brands in this regard. Her interest and participation in other activities is an example of her versatility and ability to contribute towards other industries. She has also been a part of MTV's Celebrity Rap Superstar in 2007 and was the coach for Shar Jackson who reached the finals in a remarkable way just because he was backed by the guidance of this dynamic diva.

Mc Lyte also became one of the only few artists to have featured on the Hip Hop Honours, the annual award show on VH1.
