Electronic music band, Little Dragon, was formed in Sweden in 1996. Despite releasing just four studio albums, the quartet has made a name for themselves all across the globe. Their music is a blend of trip-hop, dream-pop and features intense R&B vocals. Starting their career with a self-titled album in 2007, the female-fronted band has gradually climbed the ladder of success.
The Swedish band was formed in 1996 when three of the band members started to jam after classes. In her first year in high school, the vocalist and front woman Yukimi Nagano met her seniors Fredrik Wallin and Erik Bodin. The three would play records by hip hop artists such as De La Soul, Alice Coltrane and A Tribe Called Quest. The fourth member, Håkan Wirenstrand joined the quartet some time later.
In the quartet, Nagano serves as the vocalist as well as percussionist. She is also the band's spokesperson for their media engagements. Wallin, who is nicknamed Fred, plays bass. Wirenstrand is on keyboards and Bodin is the drummer for the group. These four comprise core of the band. For live performances and tours, Arild Werling joins them for additional keyboard duties.
After so many covers and performances in the underground scene, the quartet decided to band up properly to be introduced to the world. For the band name, both senior members proposed 'Little Dragon'. This is what they nicknamed Yukimi because of her fuming tantrums in their early years of jamming.
So with Little Dragon painted on their banner, the quartet released their self-titled debut album through indie label Peacefrog Records in 2007. The album surprised critics and garnered worldwide acclaim for its authenticity. The music on the album astonished everyone for its roots in soul and R&B. The album included the piano ballad track "Twice". "Wink" became the synth-heavy club-banger, whereas "After the Rain" was a jazz-loaded track where the keyboardist Wirenstrand impressed. "Forever" was the mood-setter for dark lounges and underground clubs. "Twice" has been featured in popular television shows Grey's Anatomy, 90210, Revenge, The Vampire Diaries and Being Mary Jane.
The following year, they released the EP for "Twice," under the title Twice Remix. They followed it up with their second album, Machine Dreams, which was released in 2009. The album's opening track, "A New," seemed like a hushed up storm whereas "Thunder Love" was astonishingly intense. The band ended the album with the sensual "Fortune".
Little Dragon's high-profile fans have brought them significant media attention as well. A year after Machine Dreams, Damon Albarn of Gorillaz invited them to feature on their album Plastic Beach, on the recommendation of his wife. They were featured on two tracks and went on to join the Gorillaz on their Escape to Plastic Beach Tour.
Their third album, Ritual Union, was released in 2011 and peaked in at number four on Billboard's Top Electronic Albums chart. Out of the eleven tracks on the album, the ones that stood out were "Brush the Heat," "Nightlight," and "Shuffle a Dream." The latter two featured on the video game FIFA 12 and in the fifth-season premiere episode of Gossip Girl respectively.
Three years later, Little Dragon released their next album Nabuma Rubberband. This fourth installment debuted at number two on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart and topped the UK Indie Albums chart. The album became Little Dragon's highest-peaking album on the UK Albums Chart, where it debuted at number fourteen. The album sold more than four thousand copies during its first week of sales. It was preceded by singles "Klapp Klapp," "Paris," and "Let Go" but "Cat Rider" stole the crown. One of their musical inspirations, Dave of De La Soul has collaborated on some tracks from this album.
Little Dragon is undoubtedly a promising band that will evolve with each new album installment as the years go by. The hauntingly beautiful vocals of Yukimi Nagano are one of the key factors that will take the Gothenburg quartet to even greater heights. So grab Little Dragon tickets and enjoy their serene, yet upbeat music, live.
