The multitalented and multi-instrumentalist Idan Raichel grew up in Kfar Saba, Israel. He played the accordion in his childhood years. He later learned keyboard and developed an interest in tango, jazz and gypsy music. As per Israeli custom, he became part of the Israeli military when he was eighteen. This proved to be a turning point in Raichel’s life as during his military service years, he joined the military rock band. Traveling to a variety of destinations, Raichel explored domestic Ethiopian culture and became attracted to their music.
He decided to leave the army and form his own band. Influenced by the richness and beauty of exotic music, Raichel started inviting musicians from origins ranging from Spanish to Hebrew to Arabic. Ingeniously fusing Israeli pop with themes form Ethiopian, Spanish, Amharic and Arabic music, Raichel created a genre that would conquer the Israeli and international music scene. As a result the genesis of the Idan Raichel Project took place.
The Idan Raichel Project spread like a new sensational wave in Israeli music landscape when it was released in 2002. The album combined talents of almost seventy musicians of different music backgrounds and it was an immediate hit. The album spawned hit songs such as “Im Telech” and “Boi” and eventually it was Triple-Platinum in Israel.
Due to its rising popularity in and outside the country, Idan Raichel Project was invited to perform at a number of venues. Due to stage limitations, the list of musicians was cut down to seven artists and musicians who would perform at the live shows. The touring-ensemble headed to major national venues including Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center and entertained massive crowds.
The second album by the ensemble came out in 2005. The album titled “Mi’ma’amakim” and included music elements from Zulu, Yemenite Hebrew and Hindi. This expanded the music repertoire of the group and also made them open to more diverse audiences. Hit singles from the album like “Aleh Nisa Baruach” became viral and the album was once again certified as Triple-Platinum in Israel.
In 2006 a special international version of “The Idan Raichel Project” was launched that helped in making the group accessible to the listeners outside of their home country. The album contained English translation notes and music videos of the bands to convey the ensemble’s concept of ‘One World, Many Cultures’ and make their music understandable for the foreign listeners.
Project’s third studio album ‘Ben Kriot Beyti” came out in 2008 and it went Platinum in the country. “Within My Walls” followed in 2009 and became the group’s second international album. The effort to release their music outside Israel made their presence felt on the international music scene. Project’s first live album “Traveling Home” was launched in 2011 which included the group’s live performances at various shows and concerts. The album sold fast and within a short time it went Double Platinum in the country.
Due to his immense talent, Raichel was honored by the President of the country to compose a poem which was written to pay tribute to the native Ethiopian community. It was performed at a concert at Jerusalem in 2012 where nearly 3000 people attended the show. He kept on collaborating with many artists and in the same year, Idan Raichel toured USA with his band.
In the following year, Raichel launched another album titled “Quarter to Six” and in July 2013, he also joined Alicia Keys as a guest performer in her very first concert in Israel. The ensemble is particularly famous for its energetic and diverse lineup of musicians. Hitting the road once again, the group will soon be performing in your hometown.
