The multitalented and multi-instrumentalist Idan Raichel grew up in Kfar Saba, Israel. He played the accordion in his childhood years. He later learned keyboard and developed an interest in tango, jazz and gypsy music. As per Israeli custom, he became part of the Israeli military when he was eighteen. This proved to be a turning point in Raichel's life as during his military service years, he joined the military rock band. Traveling to a variety of destinations, Raichel explored domestic Ethiopian culture and became attracted to their music. He decided to leave the army and form his own band.
