Everyone mark your calendars! It isn't everyday that lovers of blues music get a whole day of great artists doing their thing - live! The Hot August Blues and Roots Music Festival is back again and fans can attend it at the Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, Maryland. The festival spans over a single day and is jam-packed with great acts and blues artists. Hot August Music Festival tickets are available for August 16 at the Oregon Ridge Park. The show will kick off an hour before noon and go on well into the evening.
The Hot August Music Festival is an annual event and takes place every August. This year's Festival is the twenty-second installment and promises to be better than ever! A great feature of this festival is that it not only lets fans indulge in great blues musicians' work but also introduces the public to up-and-coming artists. Typically one-day festivals have about twenty-two acts performing on a single day but Hot August Music Festival is bringing you thirteen acts which is sure to give everyone ample time to enjoy their favorites and fall in love with some new songs.
The lineup of 2013 included Eddy Clearwater, Galactic, Boombox, 61 North, and JD McPherson. This year's line-up is as follows: Old Crow Medicine Show, Dr. Dog, Nickel Creek, Tab Benoit, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, Turkuaz, Cabinet, Ursula Ricks Project, Houndmouth, Elm, Jordan August Band, Bosley and The Solicitors.
The Solicitors came together back in 2011 and have a music sound that ranges from rock, folk, funk and blues. It's a very unique blend of music and they do it justice during their live performances with a lot of technicality on display. In recent times, they have performed at venues like the Red Red Wine Bar, Rams Head Live! and also festivals including The SoWeBohemian Fest and Pow Wow Fest.
Also performing at the Hot August Music Festival are Bosley, who were at the top of Baltimore Magazine's 2013 Hip List. People will recognize them by their amazing debut album "Honey Pig." Their live performances are known to be a high-energy affair with a great blend of music that draws inspiration from the hip hop of the 80's and the rhythm and blues of the 60's.
ELM is another very interesting act, also hailing from Baltimore, and are known for blending the genres like electronic, funk and soul in their music. The drummer, Steve Gorsuch, is sure to have you on your feet and in the front-lines with his electro-glitches and polyrhythm.
Another one of the featured acts at this year's Festival is the band Old Crow Medicine Show. They have won a Grammy Award in the 'Best Long Form Music Video' category for Big Easy Express. People might also recognize them from their hit single "Wagon Wheel", which has sold over a million copies and was certified Platinum this year. After seeing them sell over 800,000 albums, perform at festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo and also join Mumford and Sons on the Railroad Revival Tour in 2011, its hard to believe this group had their beginnings as street buskers in New York!
When we talk about Nickel Creek, we talk about a quarter of a century. It was in celebration of this anniversary that the group decided to start making music again as they had been lying low since 2007. They have received four Grammy nominations in total. In 2001 they were nominated for 'Best Bluegrass Album' (Nickel Creek) and 'Best Country Instrumental Performance' for their song "Ode to a Butterfly." In 2005 they were nominated for 'Best Contemporary Folk Album' (Why Should the Fire Die?) and again, Best Country Instrumental Performance for "Scotch & Chocolate." Their Grammy win was in the 'Best Contemporary Folk Album' category for This Side in 2003.
Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds is another wholesome addition to the line-up with their contemporary twist to classic soul music. Arleigh Kincheloe leads the band with a powerful stage presence and the band's performances in general are explosive and exhilarating. It's a great blend of soul and dirty blues-rock that audiences get a fist-full of.
Nickel Creek, Old Crow Medicine Show, Houndmouth, Dr. Dog and Bosley will be performing on the main stage, and the festival will also have a harmonica workshop for children. For all these artists and more, make sure to grab some Hot August Music Festival tickets for yourself and friends.
