The Creative Force Behind Hello, Dolly!

Hello, Dolly! is a theatrical masterpiece. Its music is by the multi-award winning composer and lyricist Jerry Herman who also wrote the lyrics. The show's book is penned down by the famous American playwright and librettist Michael Stewart. It is based on the play, 'The Matchmaker' which was written by the winner of three Pulitzer Prizes, Thornton Wilder.

A Little History

The plot of Hello, Dolly! stemmed from a 1835 English play, 'A Day Well Spent' by John Oxenford which was later adapted into a three-act musical play, 'Einen Jux will er sich machen' by Johann Nestroy. His play was later adapted into a farcical play, 'The Merchant of Yonkers' by Thornton Wilder. Unfortunately, Wilder's play turned out to be a flop which led to him revising it and introduced, 'The Matchmaker' which debuted in 1955. This version of his play became a huge success and was later made into a film which was released in 1958.

The play featured an iconic character of Dolly Gallagher Levi. It was originally written for Ethel Merman but she refused to star in the musical. The role was later offered to Mary Martin but she turned it down as well. Ultimately, Carol Channing was hired as Dolly while Gower Champion was selected to direct the show.

Hello, Dolly! did not have successful try-outs in Washington and Detroit. After the reviews were collected, major changes were made to the musical. The show was originally called, 'Dolly, A Damned Exasperating Woman' before it was renamed to 'Hello, Dolly!' after Merrick heard the Louis Armstrong's version of the namesake song.

On Broadway

Hello, Dolly! was staged on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on January 16, 1964. The show became an instant success and was approved by both the critics and the fans. The musical ran for 2,844 performances and was closed on December 27, 1970. This production of the show received a whopping ten Tony Awards out of eleven nominations including one for 'Best Musical.'

Other Productions

After its successful run on Broadway, Hello, Dolly! was staged on West End in 1965 and 2009. It has also been revived four times on Broadway in 1975, 1978, 1995 and 2017. It also toured the United States in 2018. In addition, this show has been staged in Mexico City, Argentina, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Canada.
