Born on the 4th of September 1980 to Dove Garrett, an American prima ballerina, and Georg Bongartz, a German jurist and lawyer, David chose his mother's surname over his father's, as it was easier to pronounce. At the age of four, fascinated by the violin his father brought for his big brother, David soon learnt to play it. His skills polished with time and soon afterwards he took part in a music competition and bagged the first position. He began studying violin properly at the Lubeck Conservatoire at the age of seven. By the age of twelve, he started working with the eminent and experienced violinist Ida Haendel on his trips to London and Europe.

David later joined the Royal College of Music at the age of seventeen but left it only after the first semester. Rumors were that he was expelled however, he himself waved off such rumors casually. David then joined the Julliard school in New York in 1999 and after having the privilege to be the first one to study under Itzhak Perlman, he completed his course and graduated in 2004. He also won a Composition Competition of Julliard School which had a fugue in Johann Sebastian Bach's style in 2003. Though not many people know, David also worked as a model to generate income during his time at the Julliard School.

Not needy of any introduction, David has over eight studio albums and four DVD's in total to this date and has also been declared the fastest violinist by the Guinness World Records. In 2008, he featured alongside Will Martin in A New World - 'Cinema Paradiso' and also in Tenor at the Movies - 'Parla Più Piano' and 'Se' with Jonathan Ansell in the same year. The Radio Regenbogen Award was also presented to him in March, 2008. In November, he was given the Man of The Year award by GQ in the music category. His latest album Legacy which was released on the 4th of November 2011 did a fair amount of business, though not as much as his previous albums. David then appeared in the UEFA Champions League Final on May 19th 2012, where he had the privilege to share the stage with another German singer Jonas Kaufmann. The duo was loved by the crowds and left fans craving for more.

Garrett's album Encore which was released in 2008, aimed at developing teenager's interest in classical music. Along with his band comprising of keyboard, drums and guitar, David gave concerts on classical music, rock songs and also movie themes. In 2007, he was approached by the Montegrappa firm who offered him the ambassadorship for the launch of exclusive pens from the Tributo ad Antonio Stradivari collection. The event was spread over different areas spanning Rome, Hong Kong, Berlin, London and New York.

He was also invited at the Royal Variety Performance on the 5th of December 2011 where he played his cover of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit which was loved by the audience. Later, David was invited to join a panel of judges in the 9th annual Independent Music Awards to assist independent musician's careers. To be given such an opportunity at a young age is an honor not many people are granted with but only some who are as talented as Garrett.
