Originating in the Australian Performing Group based at The Pram Factory in Melbourne, Circus Oz is Australia?s premier internationally touring Circus. Circus Oz is a contemporary Australian circus group, founded in 1978.

The troupe was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1978. Circus Oz?s 30th birthday year marks three successful decades of international touring. From New York to Hong Kong, Circus Oz has taken its self-crafted performances of wit, grace and spectacle to 26 countries across five continents.

The Circus Oz show is a rock-n-roll, animal free circus that people of all ages can enjoy. Come and enjoy seeing two hours of breathtaking agility, death-defying stunts, awe-inspiring acrobatic performances, irreverent comedy and a spectacular live band.

It was notable for being one of the very first ?contemporary? circuses featuring no animals. Culturally and chronologically synchronous with The Pickle Family Circus in San Francisco and The Big Apple Circus in New York, Circus Oz has retained its performer-centric values and ideals.

Circus Oz continues to make a show with only a dozen multi-skilled performers who all perform the entire show from acrobatics and clowning to music and aerial work. The show is usually very funny and character-driven yet the skills are high-level circus.

It features a cast comprising a diverse mix of body shapes and ages, with an equal number of men and women. The cast follows generally cheeky, anarchic and subversive style, with enough strong women and graceful men.

The creative ownership is shared between Circus Oz and the performers while the work is devised significantly by the performers for themselves.

The values of the company theoretically allow each performer to play to their strengths. Therefore every show is based on a collaborative approach and, the new material is developed around each new performer.

The company has an ongoing social justice agenda. Being open about supporting humanitarian causes, the company has presented circuses loosely based on women?s rights, land rights for indigenous Australians and a strong opposition to the Howard government?s mandatory indefinite detention of asylum seekers.

Circus Oz has performed in twenty six countries across five continents. Also on credits are their performances on 4 seasons on 42nd Street in New York City, a number of seasons at Queen Elizabeth and Royal Festival Halls in London and many.

Having performed in several countries, Circus Oz has broken box office records at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and represented Australia at scores of international festivals.

The overall tenor of the company has remained consistent over the years. The performance continues at the forefront of international contemporary circus. Today, its performances are as distinctive and dynamic as its touring program.

The troupe has a strong belief in tolerance, diversity and human kindness. The principles that were the heart of the original Circus Oz philosophy are still reflected in their performances today.
