Donald Glover, known in music by the name Childish Gambino, is an American actor, writer and musician. He is perhaps best known for portraying the role of Troy Barnes in the NBC series, 'Community.' He is a recipient of a 'Rising Comedy Star' award. He first came to prominence in music when he was signed to 'Glassnote Records' in 2011, through which he released his first album, 'Camp.' Glover is heading towards a nationwide tour to promote this album. Childish Gambino tickets for the 'Camp Gambino' tour, along with each date and venue have been announced.
Glover was born in California, but was raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He is an NYU graduate with a degree in Dramatic Writing. Along with being an actor and a musician, Glover is also a writer. He worked as a writer for 'The Daily Show' and '30 Rock.' He appeared as a guest star in both shows. In 2009, he received numerous nominations for his writing for '30 Rock.' Later that year, he moved on to working as an actor as he was cast as Troy in the NBC series, 'Community' alongside Joel Mchale and Chevy Chase. He has famously rapped in several episodes of the show as well. Glover has also worked as a comedian and has taken part in many comedy shows. He was in fact, rumored to have been given a part in 'Saturday Night Live.' He, however, took onto Facebook to say that he had only auditioned. In 2011, he hosted the Woody awards.
Childish Gambino has attained a cult following that started a campaign on all social networking websites to have him on the new 'The Amazing Spiderman' movie. His fans tweeted #donald4spiderman for days which ultimately led to Spiderman creator, Stan Lee supporting the notion that Glover audition for the role of Spiderman even though he is African-American. Glover even dressed up as Spiderman in an episode of 'Community'.
Glover came up with his rapper name Childish Gambino through a 'Wu-Tang Clan name generator.' He has released three independent albums, 'Sick Boi,' 'Poindexter,' and 'Culdesac,' one studio album, 'Camp,' and two mixtapes, 'I Am Just a Rapper' and 'I am Just a Rapper 2.' He produces and mixes his own music, and is often known as 'mcDJ.' He is currently signed to 'Glassnote' records, a label that also represents Mumford and Sons, Secondhand Serenade and The Temper Trap.
Glover has often mentioned how in his first albums, including 'Sick Boi,' he was hiding his true identity behind gimmicky music and performance styles. With his subsequent albums, he claims, he raps about events and experiences that are closer to his heart; being bullied, having suicidal thoughts, being involved in troubled relationships, alcoholism and his family. For this reason, he now does not feel that his album 'The Younger I Get' is a proper representation of him.
Childish Gambino's first music video was for his song 'Freaks and Geeks.' This song was later featured in an Adidas commercial which starred Dwight Howard. This bought Glover and his music more attention. The same year, he went on his first proper tour with the 'IAMDONALD' show. Childish Gambino Tickets and dates were announced on February 25, 2011. He played 23 different shows all around the US over the course of 33 days, starting with Ames, IA and stopping at Minneapolis, MN. All his shows in New York City, including the Williamsburg Music Hall, and the Bowery Ballroom sold out within three hours of being announced.
As Childish Gambino, he performed at the 2011 'San Diego Comic Con.' Later in the year, he also performed at the 'BruinBash Festival' in UCLA, and then on the 'Conan' show, the 'Late Show with David Letterman,' and 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.' Childish Gambino famously uploads his music on his official website, free to download.
As a live performer, Childish Gambino has done two tours, including 'IAMDONALD' and the 'Sign-Up' tour. The former was a pre-tour for which he played 11 cities over 38 days. This included mostly of promotional performances to introduce his new music before officially hitting the road.
The 'Camp Gambino' tour will not only be a US tour; some dates in Europe have also been announced. The US leg of the tour will begin in Atlanta, Georgia and end in Oakland, California.
