The award winning seventies funk group Cameo continues to fascinate millions of fans around the globe. Hailing from New York City, Cameo gained immense popularity during the eighties with hits like ‘Candy’, ‘Word Up’, ‘Find My Way’ and ‘I Just Want To Be’. Currently the group comprises of Charlie Singleton, Aaron Mills, Anthony Lockett, Tomi Jenkins and founder Larry Blackmon. The soul influence funk band will be playing live in the US this season at the Dell Music Centre in Philadelphia and at Morongo Ballroom in California. Formed in 1974, Cameo was initially a thirteen piece act known as the New York City Players. The band went though several changes in lineup over the years and now, with founding member Larry Blackmon, continues to enchant the audiences. The band released its debut album ‘Cardiac Arrest’ in 1977. The album reached number sixteen on the US R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart as well as landed on the Billboard 200 chart. It scored four and a half star rating by Allmusic and comprised of the hit tracks ‘Funk Funk’, ‘Rigor Mortis’ and ‘Find My Way’, which reached number three spot on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Beginning with their fourth album ‘Secret Omen’, released in 1979, the band produced five consecutive gold certified albums including ‘Alligator Woman’, ‘Knights of the Sound Table’, ‘Feel Me’ and ‘Cameosis’. The 1980 album ‘Cameosis’ was also the band’s first chart topping album that landed at number one spot on the US R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
The band’s most recent studio album ‘Sexy Sweet Thing’ was released in 2000. The album made it to sixty four position on the US R&B/Hip Hop chart and comprised tracks such as ‘Another Crazy Day’, ‘Same Dream’, ‘She Wants Some More’ and ‘I Wake Up’. Not a very commercially successful album as compared to Cameo’s previous hits, it garnered a three star rating by Allmusic. Since then the band has not produced any studio album, instead released six compilation albums comprising of re-mastered versions of their all time hits.
Cameo has also collaborated with numerous eminent artists and bands over the years such as Wynd Chymes, Tity Brothers, The Reddings, Barbara Mitchell, L.A Connection, George Howard, Charles Earland, Will Smith and Bobby Brown. In 2001, the band worked with Mariah Carey to produce the chart topping track ‘Loverboy’. The song reached number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart and landed at number two spot on the Hot 100 chart. Cameo’s songs such as ‘Why Have I Lost You’, ‘She’s Strange’, ‘Two of Us’, ‘Single Life’ and ‘Candy’ have all been sampled on various songs by artists such as Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Tupac Shakur, DJ Quik, Beyonce Knowles, Black Eyed Peas and Will Smith amongst others.
