Blondie was formed in 1974 in New York City by two friends, vocalist Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein. In 1973 Stein came to Brooklyn with a wish to play with a good rock band and he joined a group called The Stilettos, the groups singer was Debbie Harry. After about an year both Stein and Debbie left Stilettos and made their own band Blondie, they were further joined by other members like bassist Gary Valentine, drummer Clem Burke and keyboardist Jimmy Destri. Blondie continues to perform with the same line-up except Gary Valentine and Jimmy Destri who were replaced by Leigh Foxx on bass and Matt Katz-Bohen on keyboards.
Since debut Blondie has released nine studio albums, three live albums and thirteen compilation albums. In 1980 Blondie won the Juno Award for Best Selling International Single Heart of Glass. They have also been nominated twice for Grammy Award in the categories of International Single of the Year for their song The Tide is High and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and this time the song was Call Me. Their first album was self-titled and immediately got attention of the fans as it charted in UK at #75 and was certified Gold in Britain.
Mainstream success came to Blondie with their next two albums which were released in the same year in 1978, the name of the albums were Plastic Letters and Parallel Lines. Both these albums were released by Chrysalis Records, they were certified Platinum in UK and were the first albums of Blondie that charted in US. Parallel Lines was a bigger hit as it went to #1 position on UK Charts and was the first to earn Platinum status in the US. On Rolling Stone's list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Times Parallel Lines is placed at #140.
Blondie didn't stop here and continued their success with releasing yet another fine album in 1979 called Eat to the Beat. This album raced to the #1 slot on UK Charts, #17 on US and #9 on Australian Charts, it was again certified Platinum both in UK and the US but the album failed to impress the US fans as compared to the last one. The year 1980 saw Blondie again in action as they released their fifth studio album Autoamerican, the band had slightly changed its music style shifting from punk rock and new wave to more jazzy experimental tone which was not well received by the critics but the album still went Platinum. Blondie's sixth album The Hunter was released in 1982 but this time it failed to impress the audience and managed to chart at #9 and #33 in UK and USA respectively.
After 1982 the band went into hiatus and announced the breakup mainly due to illness of Stein and other members pursuing solo careers. After gaining full health Stein again joined hands with Debbie and Burke to revive Blondie and they have been active since 1999 with three albums already released. The latest album of Blondie is Panic Of Girls which was released in 2011. In 2006 the band was inducted in the Rock Walk of Fame.
