BJ Novak
Benjamin Joseph Manaly Novak is an American actor, stand-up comedian, and television writer. Discovered as a standup comedian, Novak has since established himself as one of the most original and prominent new voices in the comedy world.
He appears as Ryan Howard on the NBC sitcom The Office. In his time away from The Office BJ continues to headline sold-out shows at theatres, colleges, and comedy clubs such as the Hollywood Improv and Caroline's in New York City.
BJ Novak grew up in Newton, Massachusetts, and graduated from Newton South High School. While in high school, Novak wrote and cast a satirical play for the senior show. He cast Krasinski as the lead, who later credited this play for spurring his interest in acting.
With the express intention of writing for the Harvard Lampoon, Novak then applied to Harvard University. While in University, he worked for the magazine and majored in English and Spanish literature. He graduated in 2001 and mo, Novak moved to Los Angeles where he began working clubs as a comedian.
In addition to writing for the Harvard Lampoon, BJ Novak occasionally staged and performed in a variety show called The BJ Show. It was not before October, 2001 that his first live stand-up performance took place at the Hollywood Youth Hostel.
BJ soon became a fixture at popular L.A. comedy clubs such as The Improv. After writing for the short-lived The WB sitcom Raising Dad, BJ has since performed on Comedy Central's Premium Blend and on Late Night with Conan O' Brien.
Novak's television acting career began when he was signed for MTV's Punk'd, the celebrity prank show. He was best known for his improvised performances and quickly earned fan base for his pranks on Hilary Duff, Usher, and M?a. But, his performance as Hilary Duff's driving instructor remained one of the highlights of the series.
As an actor, Novak has appeared in the films Unaccompanied Minors, Reign Over Me, and Knocked Up, and Quentin Tarantino's film Inglourious Basterds. His most recent movies are Reign Over Me, Knocked Up, and Inglorious Basterds.
After hearing BJ Novak's opening joke at a comedy club, executive producer Greg Daniels immediately decided to include Novak in his upcoming project. It was a U.S. version of the hit British series The Office in which Novak was cast as Ryan Howard.
BJ is also co-executive producer of the series, and, as a writer, has scripted many of the show's most memorable episodes. Some of these were Diversity Day, Sexual Harassment, The Fire, Boys and Girls, Initiation, and Local Ad.
BJ Novak's brother Jesse is noted for being an electronic music composer and former member of the sketch comedy group Olde English.
His father, William Novak, is known for being a ghostwriter and the co-editor of The Big Book of Jewish Humor. BJ Novak was named one of Variety's Ten Comedians To Watch in 2003. He has also performed on Comedy Central and Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
