Unlike many other European nations and cities, Serbia and its capital city Belgrade were late to form a good orchestra. It was in 1923, when the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra was established by Steven Hristic. Not only was Hristic one of the most well-known Serbian conductors and composers of his time, he was also the orchestra's first chief conductor and director. Under the baton of the maestro Stevan Hristic, Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra performed its first concert on April 28, 1923.

However, the orchestra did falter during the 1990s as many international musicians refused to visit Serbia due to the civil war in Yugoslavia. It was during 2000 that the orchestra was revived.
