Anoushka Shankar
Anoushka Shankar, born June 9, 1981, is a sitar player and composer in the United States. She is the daughter of Ravi Shankar, the Indian sitar player.
Anoushka was born in London. Her father began training her in the sitar when she was eight years old. She gave a public performance at the age of thirteen; since then she has become a world famous sitar artist.
After her mother reunited with Mr. Shankar, from age seven on she lived in Encinitas, California, USA where she gave several charity performances as a teenager and graduated from the local public high school.
In an hour-long special on the US public TV network, she once explained that this is how she picked up her American accent and according to her, her Indian fans find it cute.
In 1998, Anoushka played at a gala dinner for guests including British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, in recognition of which she was presented with a House of Commons Shield. In February 2000, Shankar became the first woman to perform at The Ramakrishna Centre in Calcutta. She was chosen as one of four Women of the Year in India in 2003 by The Indian Television Academy, Asmi, and India Times. In 2004 she was chosen as one of twenty Asian Heroes by the Asia edition of Times magazine.
Her album Rise was nominated for the second time for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary World Music category. She also became the first Indian woman to perform at the Grammy Awards when she performed during the pre-telecast ceremony of the 48th awards.
She played sitar at the Concert for George, a memorial to George Harrison, on his first death anniversary. The concert was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on November 29, 2002.
Anoushka is a supporter of animal rights and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Anoushka, in collaboration with Karsh Kale, released her most recent album, Breathing Under Water which is a mix of classical sitar , electronica beats and melodies. Notable guest vocals included Norah Jones, Sting, and Ravi Shankar who performed a sitar duet with his daughter. The album was released on August 28, 2007.
Anoushka is featured on Radio Retaliation, Thievery Corporation's 2008 release.Anoushka is the debut album by Anoushka Shankar, released in 1998. The pieces begin with a slow introduction of fluid rhythm and build in climax to a spirited display of talent with the accompaniment of tabla in which four of the five themes are from Ravi Shankar.
Anourag is an album by Anoushka Shankar, released in 2000. Live at Carnegie Hall is a live album by Anoushka Shankar released in 2001, and recorded at the Carnegie Hall, in New York which earned a Grammy Nomination for World Music Category.
Rise is an album by Anoushka Shankar released on September 27, 2005. This album was chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005 (#82). On previous recordings, she followed in her father's footsteps, Ravi Shankar, by performing relatively traditional, raga-based music.
Rise, however, is another animal entirely, incorporating jazz, pop, and pan-ethnic world-music textures in an unpredictable melange. At the center of it all though are Shankar's unerring sitar expertise and traditional Indian roots.
Breathing Under Water is an album by Anoushka Shankar and Karsh Kale released on August 28, 2007. This album ranked 83 in sales on BarnesAndNoble.com[1]. Shankar and Kale expand beyond cultural and traditional borders of music with this collaboration.
With the help of featured guests Ravi Shankar, Sting, Norah Jones, Midival Punditz, Salim Merchant, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and others, the duo succeeded in blending Indian classical, electronica, dance and folk into a genre-hopping triumph.
