Anita Baker is a renowned singer and song writer who has gained recognition throughout the world for her unique talent. Anita won the Grammy Award eight times. She was born on January 26, 1958 in Toledo, Ohio, USA.

Bakers' Famous Work
Anita released her famous album, Rapture in 1986. This was after she got a major label contract with Elektra Records, a division of Warner Music Group. The famous song of the album "Sweet Love" became a top ten pop hit.

The album sold 8 million copies worldwide and earned Baker two Grammys.Anita also went on a promotional tour throughout the world for her Rapture album from 1987-1988.

Grammy Award Winner
Anita gained recognition throughout the world because she redefined the sound of contemporary music. In 1987, Baker worked together with "The Winans" on the single "Ain't No Need To Worry" and this single led Baker to her third Grammy award.

At the same time, she continued to work on her follow-up album "Giving You the Best That I Got". This album was released in October 1988. This album also gained huge success, selling 5 million copies worldwide.

It features such hits as "Just Because" and the title track, which became Baker's biggest pop hit, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 while going to number one R&B and Adult Contemporary.

Recognition in Song Writing
Anita got more involved in song writing and desired to experiment with jazz. She returned to the studio in 1990 for her third Elektra album Compositions. Baker wrote seven of the songs on this album.

The compositions of the album were recorded live. The album was produced by Michael J. Powell and included musicians Greg Philinganes, Nathan East, Paulinho da Costa, Vernon Fails, Ricky Lawson and Stephen Ferrone. Baker received her 7th Grammy award for this album.

Although the singles of this album were unable to reach the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart, they still became Top 20 hits on the R&B Singles Chart and also became moderate Adult Contemporary hits.

Follow Up Hits
After almost five years of touring, performing, and recording non-stop, Anita disappeared for awhile. Later she appeared to record the jazz standard "Witchcraft" with Frank Sinatra for his 1993 Duets album.

In September, Anita Baker released her long-awaited original album "My Everything", which was co-produced by Barry J. Eastmond and Baker herself. Despite of the fact that she had been out of the limelight for so long, this album became an instant success.

The album ranked number 4 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart and number1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The album was certified gold by the RIAA for sales of 500,000 copies.

The Best of Anita
On June 11, 2002, Rhino Records UK released "Sweet Love: The Very Best of Anita Baker" a compilation of hits in the United Kingdom from 1983-2002. Also Rhino Records released "A Night of Rapture: Live", a compilation that contains nine live tracks and three multimedia videos recorded in the late 1980s.

Two years later, in March 2004, Blue Note Records announced that they had signed Baker to an exclusive recording contract that would result in at least two albums. Bruce Lundvall, president of EMI Jazz & Classics, signed her after she approached him to record for Blue Note.

In October 2005, she released her first Christmas album, Christmas Fantasy. Once again produced by Baker and Barry J. Eastmond, the album mixes traditional Christmas carols, standards, re-imagined classics , Broadway show tunes , and three new songs by Baker and Eastmond.

She received a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance in 2007 for the song "Christmas Time Is Here." To date, Baker has four Platinum albums and three Gold albums.

In 2007, Anita Baker appeared on Dave Koz's album, "At the Movies". She sang "Somewhere" from the broadway musical, West Side Story. Anita Baker's current tour is titled "An Evening with Anita Baker".
