'Tribe' is the name given to 'College of William & Mary's sports teams. From the start of its sports programs in 1893, the college's teams have changed their name several times. From the period of 1893-1909, the name was 'Orange and White' due to the official colors of William and Mary's football team. In 1910, when the color changed to black and orange, the name was changed to 'The Orange and Black'. This name lasted till 1916, after which the teams were called the 'Indians'. In 1978, William and Mary chose its latest name, 'Tribe' that is used even today for the college's teams. In 2010, after removing tribal feathers from its logo based on NCAA rules and regulations, the college chose a griffin as its mascot. The name of the teams' fight song is 'Tribe Fight Song'. The other famous song that Mary and Tribe's teams use is 'William and Mary Victory March'.  
 
With Terry Driscol as the athletics director, the prestigious college plays for NCAA's Division I and has twenty-three varsity teams in total. These include baseball, basketball, field hockey, soccer, gymnastics, volleyball, swimming, cross-country and track and field. Others are golf, lacrosse and tennis. William and Mary is also a part of Colonial Athletic Association, Gymnastics League and Eastern Intercollegiate. The college has a great record of winning eighty-four Colonial Association championships out of a total of one forty-two, and that is the maximum number of championships won by any college in the Association. Other championships won by William and Mary include women's golf AIAW, women's gymnastics NAIA and various individual championships at national level. The college has also won thirteen Gymnastics Collegiate competitions. 1947 and 1948 were two glorious years for Mary and Tribe as it won two championships at a national level, both in NCAA' Division I men's tennis. It has won eight ECAC, forty-eight Southern Conference, ten CAA and four CGCA National Academic Team championships.
 
All of the college's varsity teams have highly talented players who have contributed in building a reputable name for the institution throughout the US. The baseball team was part of NCAA D-I Baseball Championship in 1983 and then in 2001. The football and men's basketball teams are part of the Southern Conference. Both men and women cross country teams play for NCAA. Soccer and other teams like golf, swimming, tennis and gymnastics are also a part of NCAA's D-I. Some of the well-known players that William and Mary has produced are Darren Sharper, Jon Stewart, Steve Christie, Derek Cox, J.D. Gibbs and Wade Barrett. Others include Buster Ramsey, Mike Leach, Adin Brown, Bill Chambers and Mike Tomlin.
