Formed in 1988, punk rock band Pennywise takes its name from a Stephen King novel by the same title. The group first rose to prominence in 1995 with the release of their studio album About Time that climbed up to the ninety-sixth spot on Billboard 200 and hit number fifty-five on ARIA Chart in Australia. With this album they broke into mainstream commercial success, with increasing influence of punk rock sensibilities through the nineties as was the trend among Californian bands such as Sublime, The Offspring, Green Day, Bad Religion, Blink-182, Rancid and NOFX. By 2007, they had reportedly sold more than three million records all over the world, becoming one of the most recognized independent punk rock acts of the time. The band originated in Hermosa Beach, California, and is currently comprised of vocalist Jim Lindberg, guitarist Fletcher Dragge, bassist Randy Bradbury and drummer Byron McMackin. The group managed its original lineup including bassist Jason Thirsk till be committed suicide in 1996, while Lindberg left the group in 2009 only to be replaced by Ignite vocalist Zoli Teglas, the following year. To date, the group has released ten studio albums of full length, two EPs, a live album and a DVD. Their most popular singles include Let Us Hear Your Voice, All or Nothing, One Reason, Die For You, The Western World, Knocked Down, Disconnect, God Save The USA, Waiting, Yesterday, Divine Intervention, Fuck Authority, Victim of Reality, Down Under, Alien, Society, Same Old Story, Tomorrow, and Homesick. Pennywise tickets are considered to be quite a treat among punk rock fans that enjoy the remnants of the nineties grunge style still present in their sound. Pennywise was founded in 1988 by singer Jim Lindberg, drummer Byron McMackin, bassist Jason Thirsk and guitarist Fletcher Dragge. The quartet issued two EPs, Word from the Wise, followed by Wildcard before signing with Epitaph Records in 1990. Each of the members had performed in other bands of Hermosa Beach region, where they went to Costa High School, with the exception of McMackin who studied at Redondo Union High School. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1991, a year after getting a record deal. The album soon enough got attention in the punk circles, establishing the band's nation-wide recognition. It lyrics revealed the group's optimistic mental attitude, which served to promote progressive ideal types for Generation X. However, it was not long before Lindberg left the group, at which point bassist Bradbury entered the lineup and Thirsk became the new vocalist. By 1992, the lead vocalist of The Vandals, Dave Quackenbush was position briefly as the vocalist. Pennywise issued their third studio album titled About Time in June 1995, marking the first time their album was spotted on Billboard 200 while its single Same Old Story brought it a spot on the AAC. The group started recording their fourth album the very next year, but this plan stood was thwarted for some time due to Thirsk's sudden death. They finally released their fourth album in 1997 titled Full Circle, which was spotted on several charts in the USA and some European countries as well as Australia. Within the next few years the band went on to further release Straight Ahead, Land of the Free?, From The Ashes, The Fuse, Reason to Believe and All or Nothing. Pennywise celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in early 2013 at the well known Hollywood Palladium. The band's style has mostly been described as characteristically punk while incorporating various elements from various other genres such as alternative rock, crossover thrash and metal, as well as the nineties grunge. Their lyrics and sound has been noted for being more inclined towards moral and political wrongs as can be seen in the songs The Western World, and Land of the Free. Their lyrical content reflects views on many different topics including the state of society as is obvious in the songs Fuck Authority, Victim of Reality and Society.
