Drum Corps International is basically a non-profit body which caters to junior drum and bugle corps in U.S.A and Canada. It consists of members aged between thirteen and twenty-two. Since it comprises high school/college students mostly, in a way it serves as a platform for those aiming at further enhancing their skills and looking forward to getting degree in music education. Moreover, the process of selection is a concrete proof of the fact that only the best are chosen to be part of DCI. There are basically three classes that make up the Drum Corps International class structure; World Class, Open Class and International Class. The first two are the North American corps whereas Europe and Asia fall under the International class. By and large, all the classes compete together but are judged and hence ranked individually. World Class, as the name suggests, is the highest level of corps. Being in this class also implies that this group can also meet the financial requirements. Whereas, Open Class competes at a lesser competitive level. International Class comprises all the participants outside North America who wish to be in the Drum Corps International competitions. Thus, the judging criteria and the guidelines in this class differ from other two corps; the most common one being the age limit. Moreover, in recent years the dynamics of DCI have been altered a bit in terms of membership limits and running of the competitive season. Today, all the three classes consist of one hundred and fifty members. Likewise, in yester years the DCI competitions used to run from Memorial Day to Labor Day. However now it commences in mid-June and ends simultaneously with DCI World Championships in August.
The, Drum Corps International Championships however, started in 1972 and were held during the third weekend in August. As a result of increased championship activities and lengthening of the school year, they take place during the second weekend in August. In the past college and professional sports stadiums in the U.S and Canadian cities used to serve as venues for the championships. Places like Montreal, Orlando, Philadelphia and Pasadena being among them. As of now, these championships are witnessed in Indiana. The Ames Field in Michigan City and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis have been home to Open Class Championships and World Class Championships respectively. Other than Open Class and World Class Championships, Individual and Ensemble (I&E) competitions also take place. The venues for these competitions are mostly indoor arenas located in the vicinity of championship stadiums. These competitions are not restricted to any class so whoever intends to participate and compete is welcomed with open arms.
Adding to the convenience of the participants, new instruments are also encouraged. For example in 2005 season, woodwind instruments were introduced specifically for those marching members who did not play brass and percussion instruments.
