ichael Whitaker Smith was born on October 7, 1957. His parents were Paul and Barbara Smith in Kenova, West Virginia. Michael Whitaker Smith was nicknamed Smitty.

Michael Whitaker Smith is a Christian singer, guitarist, songwriter, and keyboardist. In 1993, he released his first solo project. Since then, he has turned out to be one of the most well known artists in Contemporary Christian music. He has also been considerably success in mainstream music.

Michael Whitaker Smith himself does not really want to develop a music label. He says that he doesn't make a record for the Christian market or for the Pop market, [he] just makes a record.

Michael Whitaker Smith has often been at the top of both Christian radio and Billboard charts. He is also enlisted as one of the best keyboardists in rock and roll in Keyboard Magazine. He has sold over 13 million records, and has 29 #1 hit songs to his credit. Further, Michael Whitaker Smith, had earned 40 Dove Awards, an American Music Award, 14 gold records and 5 platinum records, and 3 Grammy Awards, up till 2005. To top that, he was also named as one of People magazine's most beautiful people.When Smith finished high school, he landed himself with a severe drug and alcohol problems. He went to Marshall University for a short time, and developed his songwriting skills along side. He also played with a variety of local bands around Huntington, West Virginia area.

Later, Smith dropped out of college. He moved to Nashville to start a professional music career. By November 1979, Smith went through a nervous breakdown that turned him towards Christianity. He got cleaned up from his drug and alcohol problems, and started playing keyboards for the CCM group, Higher Ground.Michael W. Smith released Go West Young Man [1990]. This was his first ever mainstream release that included Place In This World. In 1992, he released Change Your World. In 1998, he released his second Christmas collection, Christmastime. The following year, Smith released This Is Your Time.

Smith opened his own record label [1996], which he does not record with. Since he did not really wish to open this label, he allows it to be driven by other artists.

Almost all Smith's albums contain one instrumental track. By 2000, he recorded an album that was completely an instrumental one. This was called Freedom, after many years of wanting to create an instrumental album. The following year, Smith released an album for all praise and worship. This was called Worship [2001], and it was followed up by a sequel called Worship Again [2002]. The best part about these albums was that they were recorded live in concert.

Michael married Deborah (Debbie) K. Davis Smith. They have five children: Whitney Katherine Smith-Mooring, Tyler Michael, Ryan Whitaker, Anna Elizabeth and Emily Allison. They reside in the Nashville suburbs where the family spends time at the Smith family farm.
