John Oates's destiny, to be a musician, was decided when he started to sing from a very early age. The child prodigy began to play the guitar when he was five years old. The gifted artist never had a doubt about what he wanted to do in life. Music acted as his driving passion.
Born in New York City, John relocated to just outside Philadelphia with his family in the fifties, not knowing that this would change his life forever. Like the majority of the kids from that time, John was greatly influenced by rock music. He experienced his first live concert when he was four years old. A concert by Bill Haley and the Comets was arranged at a local amusement park, where they played their classic rock hits live on stage.
It was then when John started collecting 45 RPM singles. This included material from the Everly Brothers, Gary U.S. Bonds, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Conway Twitty, along with Elvis of course. Countless hours of John's day were spent twisting the dial on his radio transistor, trying to listen to DJs like Jerry Blavat, by tuning into local R&B stations.
As far as John's music influences are concerned, he was open to a wide range of compositions and not just the top 40 hits. He was introduced to the nascent folk music scene in the 60s by his friend's brother. Developing a liking for traditional American music, he found himself exploring bluegrass, nascent Appalachian Scotch Irish ballads, delta blues and ragtime guitar styles. These music styles were performed by recently emerging folk singers and bluesmen. They started appearing at the Newport and Philadelphia folk festivals.
During this period, John came across the opportunity to attend performances at the renowned Uptown Theatre. Visiting the venue exposed him to several R&B legends such as Sam and Dave, Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding, the Miracles, The Temptations and Curtis Mayfield. Absorbing different elements from these musicians, John developed something that can be referred to as a musical split personality.
During one performance John may be seen playing musical compositions including Doo Wop and big R&B hits plus everything in between, and on another he may be witnessed delivering a solo performance at a nearby coffee house playing blues and folk tunes. By getting John Oates tickets, concert goers can enjoy the same roots today, the roots that that form the basis of John's original singing and playing style.
In 1966, John penned and recorded his debut single I Need Your Love, which was released on Crimson label. Around that time, John met Jerry Ricks, an influential guitar player. Recognizing John's talents, Jerry took him under his wings. He introduced John to several newly discovered folk performers such as Reverend Gary Davis, Doc Watson, Mississippi John and Dave Van Ronk among others. John was lucky to have learnt first-hand from these seminal musicians by performing associated acts with them.
Given their mutual love for urban rhythm and blues, John and Daryl Hall stepped into a partnership in the seventies. Together they recorded twenty-one albums and sold more than eighty million copies Worldwide. Hall & Oates comprised the most successful duo in the history of rock music. They have been successful in scoring ten top ten hits along with more than twenty Top forty hits. They have toured all across the globe for decades. They will soon be playing at an arena near you. Make sure you get your John Oates tickets in time to catch them live.
