In London Billy Elliot was directed by Stephen Daldry while it was choreographed by the original choreographer of Billy Elliot the movie, Peter Darling.
The musical at the London's West End was produced by Old Vic Productions Plc, Working Title Films, and David Furnish. On January 10, 2006 the original cast album of the musical was released.
The musical was nominated for nine Lawrence Olivier Awards, out of which it was able to win three of them for Best Actor, Best Choreographer and Best New Musical.
On November 13, 2007 the musical was opened at Capitol Theatre in Sydney, Australia, while on December 13, 2007 it had its Australian Media Premiere.
Later, due to its immense success and popularity, the musical also won Sydney Theatre Award in January 2008 for Best Musical.
Ever since it's opening the musical has been earning positive reviews throughout its performance run as of the present moment and also won Helpmann Award for being the Best Musical.
After completing its performance run at Capitol Theatre on November 9, 2008, the musical would be transferred and opened at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne on December 13, 2008.
On October 1, 2008, Billy Elliot the musical had its opening on the Broadway Productions at the Imperial theatre. The musical at Broadway Productions is designed and directed by the same team that designed and directed London's West End productions.
The young cast members on the Broadway Productions include Kiril Kulish, Trent Kowalik and David Alvarez.
The musical is set in the period during the 1984-85 coal miners strike in the County Durham.The musical mainly revolves around the lead character of the musical, Billy Elliot, who has lost his mother and is 11 years of age. Young Billy sneaks into the girls' ballet class room, without any intention of doing so.
The girls' ballet class is taught by Mrs. Wilkinson. After observing the ballet for quite some time, Billy finds him self influenced and attracted to the dance.
Since then Billy, without the consent of his family, starts attending the ballet class, where his talent is discovered and polished by Mrs. Wilkinson.
