The lineup of the group comprises of Sam Moran, Anthony Field, Jeff Fatt and Murray Cook. Original line up had Greg Page instead of Sam Moran, but he had to retire from the group due to some illness he had back in 2006, and Phillip Wilcher who left the group to pursue his career in classical music. However later in 1988, following the death of Paul Field's (band member of The Cockroaches) daughter due to SIDS, the band dismembered and after wards, Anthony Field, in order to complete his degree in early childhood education, enrolled himself at Macquaire University. Murray Cook on the other hand played guitar for the bands like Bang Shang a Lang and Finger Guns, before working as a clerk in Australian Taxation Office prior to his enrollment at Macquaire University in the same program. Cook, Field and Page, all of them were enrolled in the same program at Macquaire University, where they met for the first time.

In order to put their educational concepts into practice they created a high quality music album for children. In the production of the album, the group took the help of Phillip Wilcher to write the lyrics for the songs and Field's former band mate Fatt to play the key board. After the album was all done, they gave some of its copies out to the children in their class to put their experiment into action. The experiment came out to be a mild success initially and needed some promotion. In order to do that, The Wiggles' produced and released two music videos along with a self produced 40 minute video version of their entire album. Later Anthony Field utilized the links that he made while in The Cockroaches to help promote their album and also toured various places within Australia.

They took their act a lot more seriously when they took a year off from teaching to see whether the Wiggles was a good idea or not. They decided to keep the rights to all their songs to themselves and financed their tour themselves. Later on their act was also supported by the characters namely being Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog, Captain Feathersword and Henry the Octopus.

Coming out with a different idea, The Wiggles soon became a major success within Australia and even abroad, and have performed in front of large audiences at venues like Madison Square Garden.
