The first U.S. Open Championship was held by the United States Golf Association on the nine-hole course of the Newport Golf and Country Club on Oct 4, 1895. The first U.S. Amateur Championship was also being held around this period and was actually the more popular of the two tournaments at the time.

The U.S Open started off as a 36-hole competition and included four trips around the Newport course in one day. Ten professionals and one amateur took part and the tournament was on its way. In 1898, the USGA extended the championship to 72 holes, with 36 holes played on each of the two days. In 1965, the present format of four 18-hole daily rounds was introduced for the first time.

The inaugural tournament was won by an English professional by the name of Horace Rawlins who surprised everyone by winning the $150 prize money. He was also awarded a gold medal and won custody of the U.S Open Championship Cup which would remain in his possession for one year.

During its first few years, the U.S. Open Golf Championship catered mainly to British golf professionals coming to the United States. That changed when the American players began to make their mark in the sport and as a result of that, the U.S. Open transformed into a prominent world golf championship.

In 1911, John J. McDermott became the first American to win the tournament and managed to repeat that feat the very next year. In 1913, the golf world was stunned when a twenty year old American amateur, by the name of Francis Quimet, won the championship. He managed to beat famous English professionals, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. He was, however, one of only five amateurs to have ever won the title with John Goodman becoming the fifth and last amateur to win the U.S. Open in 1933.

The quality of the competition kept growing as did its popularity and in 1922, tickets were sold for the first time. That resulted in a surge in entries and sectional qualifying was also introduced soon after. The U.S. Open championships popularity also coincided with the spectacular career of Georgia amateur Bob Jones, who won the U.S. Open in 1923 and then repeated this feat three more times. He is one of only four golfers in history to have ever won the championship four times, with Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan being the other three.
