The story if the UAB Blazers dates back to 1989 when UAB started off as a football club. It proved its mettle with a fairly strong game play in a span of two years. It formally took shape as an NCAA Division III team in 1991. The year and the head start coach Jim Hilyer became the good luck charm to the team. His tenure of four years with the Blazers was quiet fruitful. An overall record of 27–12–2 and a record percentage of .683 were fair enough to keep them in the top tier of the NCAA.
The starting years were also rewarding in terms of wins. A first all-time game win in , 1991 resulting in a 34–21 record. In 1993, the NCAA designated the UAB Blazers as an I-AA team. It was not until Watson Brown came in as the second Head coach that the team began settling in the Division. The 1995 season witnessed the Blazers celebrating their first ever victory against North Texas. Two seasons in this Division accumulated a record score of 21–12 overall; consequently the Blazers went up the tier to become a Division I-A team.
The 1996 season saw that the team became consistent in its performance. Hence it earned a place in the Conference league in 1999. The very next season, the team saw exceptional game play at the Baton Roughe storming LSU harder than they had ever done before. Subsequently the Hawaii Bowl came where the team played in 2004, but lost. Neil Callaway was another side of the downfall of the Blazer’s. The new coach struggled to keep the record from falling, but all in vain. He left the team to Garrick McGee who worked on the team in 2011 season without managing a win. McGee has worked on intensive and extensive training of the Blazers and the team is all set to strike back this season with full force.
