The National Collegiate Athletic Association- NCAA, which is often termed as "N-C-Double-A" is a voluntary association of almost 1,200 institutions, organizations conferences, and individuals, who are engaged in organizing the athletic programs for several colleges and universities in the United States.

They have also started working for the Canadian universities at the start of the year of 2008. Its headquarters is situated in Indianapolis of Indiana, under the supervision of President Myles Brand.

The NCAA is considered to be the largest collegiate athletic organization in the world. It has a great level of popularity of college sports among the spectators of United States.

The current set up of the NCAA was adopted in the month of August of 1973; it has a three-division setup of Division I, Division II, and Division III.

According to the NCAA rules, Division I and Division II schools are eligible to offer scholarships to athletes for playing a sport. Generally the Division III schools may not be in a condition to offer any athletic scholarships.

It is a phenomenon that the larger schools compete for the Division I and smaller schools in II and III. Division I football has a further sub-division into I-A and I-AA in the year of 1978.

It is assumed that the term "Division I-AAA" was added to delineate Division I schools, having no football program at any times.

Divisions I-A and I-AA had been renamed the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) respectively, in the year of 2006.

NCAA had been sprouted out of another organization, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS), which was established on March 31, 1906.

It happened that the son of President Theodore Roosevelt's own son, Ted, broke his collar bone playing football at Harvard. It was a time, when Roosevelt realized increasing number of serious injuries and deaths occurring in collegiate football.

He had asked the presidents of the three major Ivy League universities, Harvard, Yale and Princeton to after detailed and several meetings at the White House in October, 1905, to discuss take some steps to avoid such risks in future, and to make the sports safer for college athletics.

The IAAUS was created as one of the outcomes of those meetings.The IAAUS became the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the year of 1910.

The association had not supported any of the women's athletics, till the 1980s. There was a separate organization named the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, which used to govern all of the women's collegiate sports in the United States.

NCAA had adopted the women sports in the year of 1982, and onwards offered national championship events for women's athletics and most members of the AIAW joined the NCAA.
