For the NBA All Star Games, rules that generally apply differ from an average game. Players get to start their games at different positions since the starting All-Stars are chosen by fan vote. When two highest fan vote was totaled by two players, one of the players who is 6'6" tall played the game as a point guard, a position taken up normally by a smaller player.
The players are introduced in NBA All Star Games through much fanfare that includes lighting effects, active music and other gimmicks. This also involves special uniforms with blue assigned for the Eastern Conference and red for the Western Conference. Before tipoff, a key recording artist generally sings "The Star-Spangled Banner". Marvin Gaye gave one of the most unforgettable performances during the 1983 game. Gaye formed the team with Gordon Banks in singing who played a tape from an all night session that used numerous elements of soul music and funk.
NBA All-Star Games have their yearly significance too. The 2009 NBA All-Star Game was an extravaganza that was held on February 15, 2009 in Phoenix, Arizona. The venue was US Airways Center that has been home to Phoenix Suns. The game played was the 58th edition of NBA All-Star Game being the 3rd time that Phoenix had hosted the All-Star Game. Prior to that, the event had been hosted in 1975 and 1995. For this contest, the other venues that were considered for this event were Air Canada Center at Toronto, Madison Square Garden at New York City, Bradley Center at Milwaukee and Oracle Arena at Oakland.
The event of 2009 NBA All-Star Games commenced on Friday, February 13, 2009 with the Celebrity Game and the Rookie Challenge, a match between the best rookies and other players. Saturday marked the event with an All-Star Saturday Night featuring the Shooting Stars Competition, Three-Point Shootout and Skills Challenge. The H-O-R-S-E competition was also a pleasant part of the All-Star Weekend. The Eastern Conference All-Star team was beaten by the Western Conference All-Star team. Then, the Sophomores overcame the Rookies in the Rookie Challenge, with Sophomores' Kevin Durant named as the game MVP. Nate Robinson got his second Slam Dunk Contest while two other players came through flying colors in Skills Challenge and Point Shootout Contest. Team Detroit beat the home team, Phoenix winning their second Shooting Stars Competition. Next, the opening H-O-R-S-E competition gave Kevin Durant a winning trophy.
The NBA All Star Games are monitored by head coaches who presently lead the teams with the best winning percentage in their conference 2 weeks before the game through the Sunday. As a rule, the head coaches from the previous years were rendered ineligible to lead. Phil Jackson was the coach for the Western Conference team from Los Angeles Lakers. Jackson has had the distinction of becoming an All-Star coach four times before that as well.
Mike Brown from Cleveland Cavaliers was the coach for the Eastern Conference team becoming for the first time. He has been the second coach from Cavaliers to lead an All-Star Game since Lenny Wilkens in 1989. The Cavaliers earned an impressive 40-11 being a record.
