The Boston Bruins, based in Boston, Massachusetts, is a professional ice hockey team. The franchise is a member of National Hockey League's Northeast Division of Eastern Conference. In 1924, National Hockey League expanded to United States. Boston happened to be known as the "hockey-hotbed" for a long time, and was a natural selection of NHL for its first American hockey team. Art Ross was chosen as the first general manager by Adams. Ross performed the duty of a coach for 4 years, and stayed on team for thirty years.
Many of the Bruins' major years were wasted during the World War II, which came as a big blow. Busher Jackson, Clapper and Cowley were the only stars remaining in the team. Even though in 1943, National Hockey League paired up some six teams, which were wrongly named as "Original Six", talent sort of exhausted out. In 1994, Herb Cain, the NHL player made a record of 82 points, yet the Bruins' weren't able to make it to the playoffs, and Cain made his way out of the team two years later.
During this era, Bruins' system wasn't very well developed and not up to the mark with other five teams. Bruins' started hiring players that were not hired by the rest of the teams. In 1958, Willie O'Ree, the first ever NHL's black player, was signed with the team. The same way, in 1962, Bruins' signed Tommy Williams. Williams was from the men's hockey's only Olympic-game winning team in 1960. The Boston Bruins' fans were eager to get their minds off the long disappointment of "Stanley Cup".
After the death of Brown, the Boston Bruins' was purchased by Weston Adams in 1964, who started rebuilding it. Adams introduced Bobby Orr from Parry Sound, Ontario, a defensemen, who soon became one of the top players of the era. Orr was awarded with "Calder Memorial Trophy" for "Rookie of the Year" award; he was also named in the "Second NHL All-Star Team". In 1976, Cheevers came back from the WHA and the Bruins' managed to defeat the Flyers to make it to the semi-finals. However, they were not fortunate enough at that time, and lost from the Canadiens in the Cup Final match. The history sort of repeated itself during 1978, when the Bruins' made it into the finals, only to lose from the Canadiens once again, which was the best regular season in the present modern history of hockey. After the season, Johnny Bucyk retired.
Cherry was Bruins' general manager during the semifinal series against Hab. In the seventh game, Bruins' were on the lead by one goal from Montreal. However Montreal managed to draw the game right on time, and won it in the power play. Cherry resigned from the Boston Bruins' during the teams' offseason and joined Colorado Rockies.
A very unlikely and infamous incident happened on December 26, 1979 in a post game scrum, when a New York Rangers' fan stole the stick from Stan Jonathon and hit him with it. Many of the fans got involved which led to a fight. During this Terry O'Reilly, the future captain of the team charged the stadium along with his teammates. Because of this, O'Reilly was suspended from 8 coming games for brawling in the stadium.
Although the team made an improvement of 15 points from their previous season, they missed the playoffs in 2000-1. Jason Allison, a leading scorer was leading the Bruins. During 2001-2, further advancements were made; the team won its very first Northeast Division title since 1993, and made 13 points improvement too. The success was acquired by a squad compiled of the players; Glen Murray, Brian Rolston, Bill Guerin, Joe Thornton, and Sergei Samsonov. Although they made quite success during the regular season, it wasn't well enough to get them through the postseasons too. They backed out from the 8th ranked Canadiens in six games in the very first round.
