Singer songwriter Paul Simon was born on October 13th, 1941. He started on the road to success in 1957 when he came together with Art Garfunkel to form one of the most critically revered duos. Simon & Garfunkel defined the sound of a generation with their timeless favorites such as Mrs. Robinson, The Sound of Silence and The Boxer.
Their music has become the epitome of the 1960s and the 1970s. Most prominently featured on the soundtrack of the 1967 cult classic movie The Graduate, Simon & Garfunkel have long since enjoyed an extremely loyal and devoted following. With many artistic differences, the band faced numerous problems in reconciling their musical directions and hence they had a considerably rocky relationship punctuated with constant break-ups and make-ups.
Despite one of the most fluctuating relationships between the members of any group, Simon & Garfunkel have succeeded in establishing themselves as one of the most popular and influential groups. Constantly being referred to in popular shows such as The Simpsons, How I Met Your Mother, Futurama and SNL, there is no doubt that Simon & Garfunkel have cemented their place in the annals of pop culture with their music and their art.
Over the course of their run, Simon & Garfunkel produced five studio albums, four live albums, fifteen compilation albums and twenty-six singles. With an astounding eleven Grammy Awards, including one for Life Time Achievement, Simon & Garfunkel are an unparalleled force in the industry. After their final break up, Paul Simon embarked on a solo journey that was just as successful, if not more, than the run of the band.
Simon pursued a solo career subsequent to the disbanding of Simon & Garfunkel. Building on the fame from the band, Simon's solo career has been one of the most illustrious solo careers in music history. The success of his career can be gauged not just by the loyal fan base that he has made, but also by the critical acclaim that he has gathered over time. Listed on “100 People Who Have Shaped the World” by TIME Magazine, a two-time inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, receiver of the Library of Congress Gershwin Award for Popular Song, over twelve Grammy wins (collectively as a solo artist and as a duo), and an Oscar nomination; there is no doubt that Paul Simon is an artist beyond compare.
An idol for many, Paul Simon has been one of the most influential artists of our time. Whether it's his lyrical genius or his brilliance at composing undying melodies, Paul Simon has proved himself as an artist incomparable. The tribute serves as recognition of his talent and his massive contribution in shaping the music of a generation. Previously, tributes have been paid to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, The Who and The Rolling Stones. Now it is time to honor Paul Simon and this event promises to be an unforgettable one with twenty artists coming to be part of this experience.
While the proceeds of the concert will go towards the education of the underprivileged, this concert is an excellent occasion to pay homage to one of the most iconic singer songwriters of our time.
